Newcastle United are set to announce their first signing of the summer transfer window, with Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen heading to Tyneside. Although early reports hinted at a steep asking price, the Magpies have successfully negotiated a significantly reduced fee for the highly rated 20-year-old shot-stopper.
Magpies clinch deal for Reims goalkeeper
The Magpies have achieved a key milestone in their summer recruitment campaign by agreeing terms with the French talent. The club’s recruitment team scored an important win by managing to bring down the original price, which had been reported at around £24 million.
The deal is now nearing completion, with the young goalkeeper expected to travel to England for his medical examination. This concludes a lengthy chase for Newcastle, who had been repeatedly linked with Jaouen over the past few months before finally striking a deal with the Ligue 2 outfit.
Revised transfer fee confirmed
Despite earlier speculation that Jaouen’s transfer could exceed £20 million, the final figures now emerging suggest a far more economical arrangement for Eddie Howe’s side.
As reported by Craig Hope, Newcastle are finalising the transfer at approximately £18.65 million, representing a saving of nearly £6 million compared to the initial £24 million valuation. This adjustment gives the club greater flexibility within their summer budget.
Strategic shift in Newcastle’s transfer approach
Jaouen’s signing serves as the first clear indication of a new direction in Newcastle’s transfer policy. Instead of exclusively pursuing marquee players with inflated price tags, the club appears to be focusing on discovering top young prospects who can develop into long-term assets. The aim is to build a sustainable, competitive squad capable of maintaining high performance levels without overspending.
Jaouen is regarded as a player for the future rather than someone expected to immediately displace the current first-choice goalkeepers.
Goalkeeping changes anticipated at St James’ Park
With Jaouen’s arrival expected soon, attention is turning to the existing goalkeeping lineup at St James’ Park. Reports suggest that Nick Pope could attract interest from clubs such as Ipswich Town and Leeds United, potentially creating an opening in the squad hierarchy.
Although Burnley’s James Trafford has also been linked with a possible move to become the new starting goalkeeper, Jaouen is anticipated to serve initially as a capable understudy while continuing his development under Newcastle’s coaching staff.
