Petrol Pump Scam: Amid rising petrol and diesel prices, even a minor scam at the petrol pump can hit your wallet hard. Learn how cunning attendants dupe customers even after showing the 'zero' reading.
Petrol Pump Scam Alert: Petrol and diesel prices have recently seen a hike, directly impacting the common man's pocket. In such a scenario, what would you do if you were cheated at a petrol pump? Whenever you go to refuel your vehicle, you likely check the meter for 'zero' first. You have probably also noticed attendants asking you to verify the 'zero' reading. This builds trust, but did you know that some unscrupulous attendants still manage to cheat customers even after showing that zero?
The 'Start-Stop' Trick
This method often involves two attendants. One engages the customer in conversation to distract them, while the other repeatedly presses and releases the nozzle lever. This causes the amount on the meter to rise without the petrol flowing correctly. Consequently, the customer receives less fuel than what they are paying for.
The Trick of Interrupting the Reading
Suppose you ask for petrol worth ₹1,000. The attendant starts the meter from zero but stops dispensing fuel upon reaching ₹200, claiming a mistake was made. They then resume dispensing from that point—without resetting the meter to zero—and stop at ₹800. In this situation, the customer believes they have received petrol worth ₹1,000, whereas, in reality, they have received less fuel.
The Trick of Retaining Fuel in the Pipe
You are likely aware that petrol pump machines are equipped with a one-way check valve. This prevents fuel that has left the machine from flowing back into the tank. In some instances, attendants jerk the nozzle upwards, causing a small amount of fuel to remain trapped in the pipe or nozzle. Often, this fuel does not make it into the vehicle's tank, resulting in a financial loss for the customer.
What should you do if you suspect fraud?
If you suspect you are receiving less fuel than paid for, you can ask the pump manager to verify the quantity using a certified 5-liter jar. Additionally, you can lodge a complaint via the helpline number 1917 or the toll-free number of the respective petroleum company. A complaint register is also available at every petrol pump, where you can record a written complaint and demand action.
Simply checking that the meter starts at zero when refueling is not enough. It is essential to monitor the entire process and immediately raise questions if you notice any irregularities. A little vigilance can save you from financial loss.
