As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe continue to be among the most recognizable figures in world football. While Ronaldo and Messi have defined the sport for nearly two decades, Mbappe has emerged as one of the leading players of the current generation.
Ronaldo and Messi are preparing for what is widely expected to be their final World Cup appearances. The Portugal and Argentina captains have featured in five editions of the tournament, while Mbappe is set to compete in his third World Cup with France.
Mbappe’s international achievements already place him among the most successful players of his generation. He won the FIFA World Cup with France at the age of 19 and later claimed the tournament’s Golden Boot at 23. By comparison, Messi lifted the World Cup trophy with Argentina at the age of 35, while Ronaldo has yet to win the competition with Portugal.
Interest in the three stars remains strong among supporters worldwide. Argentina’s group-stage matches were among the first games of the tournament to sell out, reflecting continued demand to watch Messi on football’s biggest stage. France and Portugal fixtures also attracted significant attention, with tickets for the Portugal versus Colombia group-stage match commanding some of the highest resale prices of the tournament.
From a statistical perspective, Mbappe enters the competition with the strongest World Cup scoring record among the three players. The French forward has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 14 World Cup appearances. Messi has recorded 13 goals and eight assists in 26 matches, while Ronaldo has contributed eight goals and two assists in 22 appearances.
Search trends also highlight the continued popularity of the veteran stars. Ronaldo remains one of the most searched athletes globally and continues to lead football-related online search rankings. Messi and Mbappe also maintain significant global interest, ranking among the most searched footballers ahead of the tournament.
Financially, Ronaldo remains the highest-earning player of the trio. The Portugal captain's annual earnings are reported at approximately $280 million, combining club salary and commercial partnerships. Messi follows with earnings of around $120 million, while Mbappe's total annual earnings are estimated at $95 million, supported by his Real Madrid contract and endorsement agreements.
As the World Cup begins, each player arrives with a different story. Ronaldo is seeking the one major international trophy that has eluded him throughout his career. Messi will attempt to build on his World Cup success with Argentina, while Mbappe continues his pursuit of further achievements after already establishing himself as one of the tournament's most productive performers.
Whether measured by achievements, popularity, statistical output or commercial influence, Ronaldo, Messi and Mbappe remain central figures as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway.
