US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Iran had shot down a US Apache helicopter while it was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz, raising tensions in the already volatile region.
In a statement, Trump said he had been informed by the US military that the aircraft was brought down overnight. He added that the two pilots on board were safe and unharmed.
Calling the incident an "attack", Trump said the United States would be compelled to respond.
"I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz. There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," Trump said.
