As Cristiano Ronaldo gears up to captain Portugal in what will be his record sixth World Cup, speculation has begun to surface about whether his time representing his nation on home turf is nearing its end. National team coach Roberto Martinez has spoken about whether the pre-tournament friendly against Nigeria could mark a final farewell for the Portuguese icon.
No retirement plans for the captain
Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has made it clear that Ronaldo does not view Wednesday’s warm-up fixture against Nigeria as a farewell match for the home supporters. At 41, the Al-Nassr striker is on the verge of making World Cup history, yet the former Real Madrid star remains completely focused on the immediate challenge ahead.
Speaking to the press ahead of the game in Leiria, Martinez praised the professionalism and leadership of his veteran forward. “Our captain sets an example in everything he does,” Martinez said on Tuesday. “He gives his all, 24 hours a day, to help the national team. Our captain and the other players are not thinking about what comes next. No one knows what the future holds because injuries or circumstances can change things that are beyond their control.”
The secret to Ronaldo’s longevity
While most footballers retire well before their forties, Ronaldo continues to push the limits of physical endurance. Martinez believes that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s remarkable fitness is a result of his extraordinary mental strength. The Spanish coach has previously pointed out that Ronaldo’s enduring success stems from his relentless “hunger”, which has not faded despite his trophy-laden career — the only major title missing being the World Cup itself.
“The focus is on training, being the best, applying the concepts, and taking pride in wearing the national shirt,” Martinez added. “That’s the standard he sets. His only goal is to use today’s work to be better tomorrow.” Ronaldo, who holds the all-time men’s international records for both appearances (227) and goals (143), appears ready to lead Portugal’s attack yet again as they chase glory across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Experimental approach against Nigeria
The friendly versus Nigeria provides Martinez with his last opportunity to fine-tune the squad before they head to the World Cup. Although Ronaldo is expected to start, the coach plans to rotate heavily, ensuring every player gets valuable minutes and match rhythm before their Group Stage opener against DR Congo on June 17.
“The plan is to make eleven substitutions and ensure everyone gets some playing time,” Martinez explained. “For five or six of our players, it will be their first international appearance. The focus remains on individuals, to give minutes to those who need them. Our top priority is to have all players ready for the flight to the World Cup. Portugal’s strength lies in collective commitment. It’s our duty to prepare the players to contribute to the team and use their talent to win.”
Tactical flexibility and the African test
Martinez believes that facing Nigeria offers ideal preparation for Portugal’s opening World Cup fixture, drawing parallels between the Super Eagles and their first opponents in the tournament. He highlighted that despite Portugal’s abundance of individual talent, the main focus lies in maintaining the team’s structure and a proactive, high-pressing system that has been central to Portuguese football development over the past decade and a half.
“This is a good opportunity to work on elements similar to what we’ll face against Congo,” Martinez said. “We have a group full of talent, but also the structure and discipline required to win every game. The numbers speak for themselves—goals, victories, and total dedication to pressing high and defending quickly. That’s our style, built over 15 years of work in Portuguese youth football. As for tactics, I said it from the start: the idea is to maintain tactical flexibility that allows us to adapt individual brilliance within the team’s framework.”
