Arrests Raise Security Concerns at Sribhumi District Jail

The accused have been identified as Rudra Deori, Subhashish Ghosh, Masid Ali Laskar and Biswajit Barua.

Sribhumi, June 10: Four officials from the Sribhumi District Jail, including two assistant jailers and two warders, have been apprehended for allegedly enabling the illegal distribution of mobile phones and other banned items to inmates.

The individuals arrested are Rudra Deori, Subhashish Ghosh, Masid Ali Laskar, and Biswajit Barua, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday.

The arrests, which took place on Tuesday, have sparked significant concerns regarding the security and internal oversight of the prison.

Additional Superintendent of Police Trinayan Bhuyan, who supervises the district Crime Branch, stated that investigators examined call logs, communication patterns, and usage data from the seized mobile devices as part of their inquiry.

“Numerous individuals were interrogated during the investigation, which aided the police in collecting the necessary evidence to act against the suspects,” Bhuyan remarked.

Reports indicate that these arrests followed an extensive investigation into the discovery of a substantial amount of contraband within the district jail earlier this year.

This operation was executed on February 2, when police conducted an unannounced raid at the facility under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Leena Doley.

During this search, authorities confiscated 29 mobile phones, chargers, SIM cards, and various other prohibited items from different sections of the jail.

According to police sources, intelligence reports suggested that inmates were regularly communicating with individuals outside the prison and allegedly coordinating illegal activities from within.

Bhuyan further noted that the administration is implementing measures to enhance prison security and avert similar incidents in the future.

“We are introducing improved monitoring, stricter inspections, and better surveillance systems as part of these initiatives,” he stated.

In response to these findings, authorities initiated a special operation that ultimately revealed evidence implicating prison staff.

As the investigation unfolded, suspicions grew regarding the involvement of certain officials, leading to their arrest after several months of inquiry.

Police continue to interrogate the arrested officials to gather more information, while prison authorities have been instructed to increase inspections and bolster measures to prevent contraband from entering the facility.
