Manchester United’s pursuit of a long-term replacement for Casemiro is still in progress.

Although Casemiro himself has supported the signing of Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder’s strengths are considered to be in different areas.

With a major midfield overhaul similar to Paris Saint-Germain’s recent approach being planned, head coach Michael Carrick is aiming to bring in at least three new players in that position.

The attempt to sign Elliot Anderson has proven to be difficult, which has prompted the Red Devils to explore other possible options.

Sandro Tonali appears to be an ideal candidate, yet the Italian midfielder’s high transfer fee and salary demands have become sticking points.

Newcastle United are open to the idea of selling him, but as reported by TeamTalk, the 26-year-old is keen on returning to Italy, ideally to his former club.

AC Milan are eager to bring the Italy international back to the San Siro, but the club itself is currently dealing with internal instability.

Until the Rossoneri manage to resolve their internal issues, a transfer seems unlikely. For now, the Serie A side are exploring various ways to reduce the overall transfer cost.

According to TeamTalk, “AC Milan do have a ‘pathway’ to a deal for Sandro Tonali, but his dream move has been complicated by the growing uncertainty behind the scenes at San Siro. TEAMtalk understands that the Newcastle United star’s camp are becoming increasingly frustrated by Milan’s failure to put a new leadership structure in place.”

“The Italy international remains one of Milan’s dream targets this summer and, as TEAMtalk has previously revealed, a return to the Rossoneri remains Tonali’s preferred option should he leave Newcastle.”

“However, sources have told TEAMtalk that the ongoing delay in appointing both a sporting director and a new head coach is causing concern among those close to the player. Newcastle, however, are not making things easy. Sources indicate the Magpies continue to value Tonali at close to £100 million and have no intention of allowing him to leave cheaply.”

“Yet Milan believe there is a potential pathway to completing a deal. We understand the Rossoneri are exploring structures involving money still owed between the clubs from previous dealings involving Tonali and Malick Thiaw, which could help reduce the overall cash outlay required.”

The report also adds that Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal are all closely monitoring the situation.

There is growing optimism that a deal might materialise towards the end of the summer transfer window. This is why the Old Trafford outfit are currently concentrating their efforts on securing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United after completing the signing of Ederson.
