Pawan Kalyan's Journey from Naxalism to Spirituality

Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and a prominent actor, recently disclosed that he once contemplated joining Naxalism during his youth. In a podcast discussion, he expressed that his frustration with global injustices led him to explore radical ideologies, even participating in activist gatherings. However, his elder brother, actor Chiranjeevi, played a crucial role in steering him away from that path, guiding him towards a more positive outlet that eventually led to his successful career in acting and spirituality.

Chiranjeevi's Influence on Pawan Kalyan

During an interview on a podcast with Smita Prakash, Pawan Kalyan recounted how, in his late teens, he was deeply affected by worldwide political turmoil and violence. Events such as apartheid in South Africa, the LTTE conflict in Sri Lanka, and various separatist movements shaped his worldview. At that time, he even thought about embracing Naxalism, believing that armed resistance might be a solution to global issues. Between the ages of 17 and 21, he explored various forms of activism and traveled to Mumbai for short film festivals and documentary projects, yet he felt lost and sought purpose.
The pivotal moment came when Chiranjeevi posed a thought-provoking question regarding responsibility. Pawan recalled, "That’s when my brother entered the picture. He asked me, if I were not Chiranjeevi's brother and had family responsibilities, would I still consider such a path? I was left speechless and had no answer." This conversation prompted him to delve into spirituality before pursuing acting.

Pawan Kalyan's Film Career

Pawan Kalyan made his acting debut in 1996 with the film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi, but his breakthrough came with the 1998 hit Tholi Prema, which solidified his status as a leading actor. He has recently appeared in films such as Hari Hara Veera Mallu, They Call Him OG (2025), and Ustaad Bhagat Singh (2026). Additionally, he has signed on for a new project directed by Surender Reddy, with more announcements expected soon.
In a recent event, Chiranjeevi launched his 158th film, directed by Bobby Kolli, with Pawan Kalyan participating in the ceremony by giving the first clap. This film marks a reunion for the brothers following their collaboration on Waltair Veerayya, with both Pawan Kalyan and Nagababu attending as special guests.
