The Ghanaian football community is mourning the loss of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong, who tragically passed away following an armed assault on the club’s team bus. According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the vehicle was ambushed by a group of masked assailants carrying guns and assault rifles, leading to a fatal incident that has prompted renewed concerns about team safety in the country.
The attack took place on April 12, 2026, along the Goaso–Bibiani road while the team was returning home after playing an away fixture in the Ghana Premier League. Berekum Chelsea had just completed their match against Samartex in Samreboi, located in the southern part of Ghana. The club later disclosed that their bus came under gunfire and that Frimpong had been taken to a regional hospital for treatment.
In a formal statement, Berekum Chelsea shared further details of the horrifying event: “On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to stop our movement. Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles began shooting at our bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff ran into nearby bushes for cover.”
The Ghana Football Association subsequently confirmed that Dominic Frimpong had succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the attack. Expressing deep sorrow, the GFA stated: “The GFA has received with profound shock and deep sadness the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club. This heartbreaking event is a great loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a young, promising player whose dedication and enthusiasm for football reflected the true spirit of our league.”
The GFA further added: “We call for all necessary actions to be taken to ensure justice is delivered.” The association is coordinating with both local and national law enforcement authorities to investigate the attack and has pledged to enhance security protocols for football clubs travelling within Ghana to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
Dominic Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January and had made 13 appearances for the club, scoring two goals during his loan spell. His passing marks a devastating moment for the Ghana Premier League and for all those who knew him both on and off the field.
This is not the first instance of such an attack on a team in Ghana. In 2023, Legon Cities were also targeted while travelling from a match against Samartex, though fortunately, no injuries were reported during that incident.
