Thomas Tuchel has downplayed the brief moment of confusion between Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon during England’s final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder initially appeared ready to take a second-half penalty, only to be instructed to hand the ball to the newly-signed Barcelona winger.
Penalty confusion during England’s win
England’s 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in Orlando was largely straightforward, but an unusual exchange between Bellingham and Gordon drew attention in the second half. When the Three Lions earned a penalty, Bellingham promptly picked up the ball intending to increase the lead. However, after quick communication from the sidelines, the Madrid star was told to pass the responsibility to Gordon.
The Barcelona forward, who has been in impressive form, confidently stepped up and converted the spot-kick to make it 2-0. Although the moment appeared awkward on the field, Tuchel was quick to clarify that the issue stemmed from the coaching staff rather than any personal disagreement. The “miscommunication” occurred amidst numerous substitutions as England sought to fine-tune their squad ahead of their tournament opener.
Tuchel explains the mix-up
Speaking after the match, which was delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms in Florida, Tuchel accepted full responsibility for the confusion. The German manager explained that the normal system for assigning penalty takers had been disrupted by the high number of changes made during the friendly, especially since regular penalty-taker Harry Kane had already been substituted.
“There were many substitutions, so it became unclear who the next penalty taker was,” Tuchel told reporters. “Anthony was actually the second choice. Normally, the list is displayed clearly because we know we only have five substitutes, but with the number of changes we made, it wasn’t updated. So yes, it was a bit of a miscommunication from our side, and we had to communicate that verbally.”
Tuchel also praised Bellingham’s contribution in midfield, saying: “We have made it very clear what defines us — intensity, pressing, and work off the ball. I wanted to see Jude link up with Harry (Kane), Elliot (Anderson), and Declan (Rice) in central areas for the first time. I already know what Morgan (Rogers) offers there, but for Jude, this was a new combination. He fully embraces these ideas, enjoys doing it, and that’s part of our game — he did it at a very high level like everyone else.”
Focus on the team, not individuals
When asked whether the penalty incident or individual performances of Bellingham and Gordon would influence his World Cup starting lineup, Tuchel chose not to comment on specific players. Instead, he emphasised the collective effort and praised the attitude of those who came off the bench under challenging conditions.
“I don’t want to focus on just those two players because it’s too little to judge from one incident,” Tuchel said. “We started with a very strong team and had excellent substitutes. That’s the nature of this group — the attitude from the bench was fantastic. I liked the overall performance across the 90 minutes, and both Jude and Anthony contributed to that.”
Three Lions set for Dallas
Despite the minor misunderstanding over the penalty, the mood in England’s camp remains highly positive. Goals from Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, and Ollie Watkins secured a comfortable win for Tuchel’s side, with no new injury concerns emerging from the game. The team will now travel to their base in Kansas City for final preparations before their World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas.
Tuchel expressed confidence in the squad’s chemistry as England aim for their first World Cup title in six decades. “If we can continue to play like this, grow into the tournament, and maintain this level of cohesion, brotherhood, and team spirit, we’ll build a fantastic connection with the fans. Hopefully, it becomes an unforgettable experience,” the manager concluded.
