Radek Vitek’s journey with Manchester United appears to have reached its conclusion, according to the latest reports.
Following an impressive loan stint with BW Linz in Austria during the 2024-25 campaign, Vitek spent the subsequent season on loan in the Championship to enhance his development further.
The Czech goalkeeper thrived during his time at Bristol City, where he quickly became a fan favourite.
Initially brought in as cover for the Robins’ injured Max O’Leary, Vitek seized the opportunity and firmly established himself as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.
When O’Leary returned to fitness, he found himself serving as backup to Vitek, who had already made the position his own. Even after sustaining an injury that sidelined him for a month, Vitek returned to reclaim his place between the posts without missing a beat.
O’Leary eventually departed midway through the campaign, leaving Vitek as Bristol City’s undisputed number one at Ashton Gate.
His strong performances led many to predict a breakthrough 2026-27 season for the 22-year-old. Football veteran Roy Hodgson even remarked that Vitek possessed all the qualities required to become a top Premier League goalkeeper.
However, United’s goalkeeping hierarchy was complicated by the emergence of Senne Lammens. Were it not for the Belgian’s presence, Vitek might have been in serious contention for the first-choice role at Old Trafford.
Lammens, who also enjoyed a superb 2025-26 season, was named the Premier League’s transfer of the season and has since solidified his place as United’s primary goalkeeper.
A potential competition between Vitek and Lammens for the starting spot would have been intriguing, but according to a report from Sky Sports, such a scenario will not materialise.
The outlet stated: “A potential option to back up Lammens is not expected to include returning keeper Radek Vitek. Czech Republic age-group international Vitek had a successful loan spell at Bristol City last season, but is expected to continue his career elsewhere as United are set to cash in on the 22-year-old.”
While the decision to sell Vitek may appear harsh, it is ultimately a logical one. The young goalkeeper would likely have been dissatisfied with a backup role behind Lammens, and retaining two ambitious players of similar profiles could have led to tension within the squad.
Moreover, Lammens has already shown signs of becoming United’s next elite goalkeeper, drawing early comparisons to David de Gea. The sensible move for the club is to fully back Lammens while pairing him with a seasoned deputy.
With both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana expected to depart, speculation suggests that either Karl Darlow or Sam Johnstone could be brought in to provide experienced support in the goalkeeping department.
