Xavi Simons has established himself as one of the most exciting attacking talents in world football, earning recognition for his creativity and influence at both club and international level.
Born into a football family as the son of a former professional player, Simons began attracting attention at a young age. At seven years old, he left the Netherlands to join Barcelona's renowned La Masia academy, where he spent nine years developing his game alongside several highly regarded young players.
In 2019, Simons moved to Paris Saint-Germain after progressing through Barcelona's youth system. He quickly became a key figure for PSG's Under-19 side before making his senior debut in 2021 as part of the club's Ligue 1-winning squad.
A move back to the Netherlands followed in 2022 when he joined PSV Eindhoven. During a standout campaign, Simons scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists, helping PSV win the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield. His performances also saw him finish as the Eredivisie's top scorer.
Paris Saint-Germain later exercised a buy-back clause and brought Simons back before sending him on loan to RB Leipzig for the 2023-24 season. The attacking midfielder quickly became an important player for the Bundesliga club, earning the number 10 shirt and establishing himself as one of the team's primary creative influences in both domestic and European competition.
After another successful period in Germany, RB Leipzig completed a permanent transfer in January of the 2024-25 season. However, interest in Simons continued to grow as his reputation expanded across Europe.
His performances eventually attracted strong interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham ultimately secured his signature, bringing the Dutch international to North London as one of the club's most significant additions.
On the international stage, Simons has become an increasingly important figure for the Netherlands. He made his senior debut during a 3-1 victory over the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has since become a regular selection for the national team.
At UEFA Euro 2024, he started all but one of the Netherlands' matches and scored his country's only goal in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to England, further underlining his importance to the squad.
However, a significant setback arrived in April 2026 when Simons suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing for Tottenham against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The injury ended his season and ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite the disappointment, Simons remains one of the Netherlands' brightest talents. Having already built an impressive career at both club and international level, he is expected to focus on his recovery with the aim of returning to action in 2027.
