The memories of the tragic plane crash that occurred a year ago remain vivid for the people of Gujarat and across the nation. In response, the Gujarat government has taken significant steps to transform the affected area into a new identity. A comprehensive redevelopment plan has been announced, allocating over ₹547 crores to enhance modern healthcare and medical education facilities in the region.
Details of the Air Crash
On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI-171 tragically crashed into dormitory and dining hall buildings, resulting in the loss of 260 lives. This incident took place at the New Mental Complex, which operates under the Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department, located near the Asarwa Civil Hospital.
Government's Commitment to Development
Gujarat's Health Minister, Praful Panseria, paid tribute to the victims, expressing the government's intention to transform the scars of this tragedy into a commitment to development. He emphasized that the site will be developed into a center for health and education, fostering new opportunities for future medical students and healthcare services.
Overview of the New Mental Complex
The New Mental Complex spans approximately 171,100 square meters. Prior to the accident, it housed various facilities, including accommodations for teachers and staff, undergraduate dormitories, married postgraduate dormitories, and a dining hall. Many structures built during 2015-16 were severely damaged in the crash.
Extent of Damage from the Crash
During the incident, the aircraft collided with the dining hall and several dormitory buildings. The married postgraduate dormitory suffered the most damage, housing 92 students and their families. Following the crash, the health department arranged temporary housing and meals for the affected students.
Plans for Reconstruction
The government has decided to completely demolish all damaged buildings in the crash area. Subsequently, a new hospital for spinal and paralysis treatment, a rehabilitation center, a physical therapy college, and a dormitory with a capacity for 500 students will be constructed over approximately 25,000 square meters.
Financial Allocation for the Project
For the current financial year, around ₹175 crores has been allocated for the rehabilitation center, physical therapy college, and dormitory, while ₹120 crores is earmarked for the spinal and paralysis treatment hospital. This totals nearly ₹295 crores for this segment alone.
Expansion of Dormitory Facilities
Additionally, dormitory facilities will be expanded with new buildings for married postgraduate students. The plan includes developing a total of 510 residential units across eight buildings, with an estimated cost of ₹192 crores.
Establishment of a Food and Drug Testing Laboratory
A food and drug testing laboratory will also be established within the complex, covering approximately 3,100 square meters. This laboratory will be modeled after the advanced facility operating in Vadodara, with an estimated project cost of ₹50 crores.
Future Prospects for the New Mental Complex
Experts believe that once the redevelopment is completed, the New Mental Complex will emerge as a leading center for healthcare services, medical research, and education in the state. This project aims to provide a new identity to a site that once witnessed one of the country's most tragic air disasters, now symbolizing development and reconstruction.
