A significant weather system is poised to impact the highly awaited UFC event scheduled for Sunday on the South Lawn of the White House. Meteorologists are raising alarms about thunderstorms that could disrupt the outdoor gathering, which is expected to attract over 100,000 attendees. This event coincides with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, and concerns are mounting as forecasters predict the likelihood of severe thunderstorms during the peak hours of the fights.
The primary threats include hazardous lightning and strong wind gusts. Thunderstorm activity is anticipated to begin in the afternoon, with the first signs possibly appearing as early as 2 p.m. ET. The storm risk is expected to persist until around 9 p.m. ET, coinciding with the scheduled fight times.
Forecast models indicate a line of thunderstorms could sweep through the Washington, D.C. area between approximately 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., bringing with it frequent lightning and wind gusts that may exceed 50 mph. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has categorized the region under a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk, affecting areas from Virginia to New Jersey, with Washington, D.C. at the heart of the threat.
Officials caution that storms developing during the warmest part of the day could lead to damaging wind bursts. The scale of the event adds to the anxiety, with over 100,000 spectators expected to gather around the Ellipse and an additional 4,000 on the White House South Lawn.
Inside the venue, fights are scheduled to occur in the UFC’s “Octagon,” which is situated beneath a nearly 100-foot tall lighting structure known as the “Claw.” This massive metal framework already stands out in the Washington skyline, but it could also increase the risk of lightning strikes during severe weather.
UFC CEO Dana White has previously expressed the difficulties associated with outdoor fight events, noting that weather remains the greatest uncertainty for organizers. “If it rains, we’re going. If it snows, we’re going,” White stated in a Fox News interview. “The only thing that kills us is lightning.”
