IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), one of the world's largest universities, has commenced the online application process for admission to 36 PhD courses for the July 2026 session. The subjects available for PhD study at IGNOU include Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Public Administration, Biochemistry, and Chemistry, among others.
The PhD admission process at IGNOU will be conducted in accordance with the UGC Regulations, 2022. Applicants can seek admission under four categories: UGC-NET with JRF, UGC-NET (eligible for Assistant Professor and PhD), UGC-NET (eligible for PhD only), and the university-level entrance test. As part of the selection process, candidates from all categories must appear for an interview/viva-voce; however, those who have qualified for JRF and NET are required to appear only for the interview. All admitted research scholars must complete the prescribed coursework and maintain a minimum attendance of 80 percent.

What are the eligibility criteria?
Students wishing to pursue a PhD at IGNOU must hold a post-graduate degree with at least 55% marks. However, relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to reserved categories. A minimum of 50 percent marks in post-graduation has been prescribed for them. Additionally, candidates holding a four-year undergraduate degree may also apply for PhD admission, provided they have secured at least 75 percent marks in their qualifying examination.
What is the duration for completing the PhD?
IGNOU has set a minimum duration of three years and a maximum duration of six years for completing the PhD. However, female candidates and persons with a disability of 40 percent or more will be granted an additional two years to complete their doctoral studies.
