Petrol-Diesel Restrictions: The government has issued a new order regarding fuel. Under this directive, bulk buyers will no longer be able to purchase fuel from retail petrol pumps; they will only be permitted to buy from designated bulk sale points.

Petrol-Diesel Limit: To curb revenue losses faced by state-owned oil companies, the government has completely banned the bulk purchase of fuel at retail petrol pumps. Consequently, under the new rules, bulk buyers are barred from sourcing fuel from these retail outlets.

Entities such as malls, hospitals, large factories, travel agencies, and private bus operators—who previously purchased large quantities of diesel from retail pumps—will no longer be able to do so. They will be restricted to purchasing diesel solely from bulk sale points.

What is the set limit?

Additionally, a maximum limit of 200 liters per vehicle per day has been established. As a result, the general public and small commercial vehicle operators will also be unable to purchase more than 200 liters of diesel from petrol pumps in a single transaction or within a single day.

This decision aims to prevent overcrowding at retail petrol pumps and mitigate sudden fuel shortages, ensuring that ordinary motorists continue to have easy access to fuel. Meanwhile, reports of a potential agreement between the US and Iran last Friday caused international crude oil prices to drop below $86 per barrel.

Why was the restriction imposed?

The restriction specifically targets diesel sales. The notification states, "Retail outlet dealers shall dispense HSD (High-Speed Diesel) only into vehicle tanks or containers approved by PESO. No more than 200 litres of diesel shall be supplied to a single customer or vehicle per day, and the purchased HSD cannot be resold." This order has come into effect immediately and will remain valid for a maximum period of three months. Officials and executives from state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs), speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that this move aims to ensure the availability of petrol and diesel for genuine customers and to prevent the diversion of auto fuel, given the significant price gap between retail pump prices and bulk rates. In Delhi, the retail price of diesel at pumps is ₹95.20 per litre, whereas the bulk price stands at ₹134.50 per litre.
