IRCTC Food Update: IRCTC has advised passengers against booking food through unauthorized e-catering platforms, as this can lead to issues such as poor-quality food, payment disputes, and data security risks.
Railway Catering Rules: Concerns regarding the quality of food served on trains have been raised in recent months. Consequently, IRCTC has advised passengers to book food only through authorized platforms. While the scope of the railway's e-catering service has expanded, numerous private platforms have entered the market; however, the railways state that not all of these companies are authorized.
According to IRCTC, certain platforms were providing e-catering services without permission and failing to comply with railway regulations. This could expose passengers to problems like substandard food, payment disputes, and data security issues. This is why the company has adopted a strict stance.
Legal Action Against Unauthorized Platforms
IRCTC stated that it initially issued a legal notice on February 18, 2026. Subsequently, criminal complaints were filed against several unauthorized food delivery operators on March 16 and April 11, 2026. A special investigation drive identified multiple platforms operating e-catering services without railway approval. Legal action has been initiated against them for violating regulations.
Platforms covered under IRCTC's action include RailRestro, RailMitra, TravelKhana, TrainsCafe, DIBRail, RailFood, ComesSum, TravelerFood, FoodOnTrack.in, eCatering App, KhanaOnline, TrainWay, RailMeal, and TrainMenu.
What is the advice for passengers?
IRCTC has urged passengers to order food exclusively through its official e-catering website, the 'Food on Track' mobile app, or railway-authorised food partners. Doing so ensures benefits such as food hygiene, secure payments, accurate billing, and customer support.
Railway officials believe that as the scope of online food delivery expands, the number of unauthorised platforms is also rising. Consequently, strict measures are necessary to maintain passenger safety and service quality.
Growing concerns regarding food quality
Questions regarding train food have been raised in the past as well. A report by a consumer organisation in April 2026 claimed that bacteria levels exceeding prescribed standards were found in certain food items on a premium train. This report intensified the debate surrounding the quality and monitoring of food served on trains.
The Railways advises passengers to verify the legitimacy of a platform before ordering food; otherwise, the service could lead to trouble rather than convenience. Safe and reliable service can only be assured when ordering through correct and authorised channels.
