Sunday mornings are for redrawing the city

Sundays mean waking up late and enjoying the day at one’s leisure. But not for this group of sketchers whose Sunday begins at 8 am! They are already seated across a corners of the city with sketchbooks and water colour palettes, some sketching old buildings, some focusing on passing crowds, while others spending several minutes simply observing before even drawing the first line. And for the next two hours, nobody is really in a hurry.

PAUSE, SKETCH, FIND PEACE

That sense of pause seems to be what keeps many members returning week after week. Interior designer Nikita Vishwakarma, who joined recently through a friend, describes the meets as a mental escape. “Being part of this activity feels peaceful. Nobody judges you here and you get the opportunity to improve your skills by sketching consistently,” she says. For others, the community has become a way to reconnect with creativity that quietly disappeared somewhere between adulthood and work schedules.

A COMMUNITY BUILT AROUND THE CITY

Founded in 2015, the group meets every Sunday morning at a different location, from Shaniwar Wada and Pataleshwar Caves to the crowded lanes of the peth areas.
What started with a simple Facebook post by Joshi inviting people to sketch outdoors has now grown into a community of around 60 to 70 active members. The Pune chapter is connected to the larger global Urban Sketchers movement, with members attending international sketch festivals and events.
