New Delhi: Somvati Amavasya, which has great importance in the Sanatan tradition, is being celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across the country today i.e. on 15th June, Monday. This year’s Amavasya is considered very rare and historical from the point of view of astrology. ‘Adhik Maas’ is ending on this day. Along with this, Sun God is also changing his zodiac sign today and entering Gemini. According to astrologers, such a great coincidence of planets and dates has occurred after decades. Which increases the spiritual importance of this day manifold.
Amavasya will be celebrated today itself on the basis of Udaya Tithi.
According to almanac calculations, Amavasya Tithi had started yesterday i.e. on 14th June at 12.20 pm, which is ending today on 15th June at 8.24 am. In Sanatan Dharma, the date present at the time of sunrise is considered supreme. Today all the major religious rituals, bathing and donations are being done on Monday only.

Since this Amavasya falls on Monday, it has been named ‘Somavati Amavasya’. Monday is dedicated to Mahadev, due to which there is a rush of devotees in Shiva temples for Jalabhishek and special worship.

Pitru Tarpan and respect for elders
In religious beliefs, the date of Amavasya is considered best for the satisfaction of ancestors. On this day, after bathing in the holy rivers, people are performing Pind Daan, Tarpan and Shraddha rituals for the peace of the souls of their departed ancestors. It is believed that the tarpan done on this day brings happiness and prosperity to the family. Scholars are also of the opinion that real filial piety lies not only in rituals, but in serving and respecting living parents and elders of the house.
Auspicious time for bathing and donating
Service and charity give special results on this day. People are donating food to the hungry, water to the thirsty and clothes to the needy as per their capacity. Today the two most important and auspicious times of the day are as follows.
wee hours: From 4:02 am to 4:42 am. This time was best for taking holy bath and chanting mantras.
Twilight time: This time from 7:17 pm to 7:37 pm will be especially fruitful for evening aarti, lamp donation and worship of Shiva.
