The disease burden in India is steadily rising, and its impact is more pronounced among women than men. According to the latest data on health and living conditions from the Ministry of Health's National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the incidence of illness is generally recorded as higher in women compared to men.
Specifically, musculoskeletal disorders, hypertension, thyroid disorders, and infections are more prevalent among women. Conversely, cases of heart disease associated with chest pain and physical injuries are recorded relatively more frequently among men. The data also indicates that the rise in illnesses is becoming a serious issue linked not only to health but also to women's social status, economic standing, and functional capacity.
According to officials, the number of individuals reporting an illness within the 15 days before the survey was significantly higher among women than men. A total of 13,504 cases of illness per 100,000 population were recorded among men, whereas the figure stood at 17,006 for women. This disparity highlights that women face a relatively higher burden of health-related issues. Among the major disease categories, 3,523 cases of heart disease were recorded in men, compared to 4,273 cases in women.
**Greater pressure on women regarding mental health**
Data concerning mental and neurological disorders is also a cause for concern. Conditions such as depression, stress, anxiety, and various nervous system disorders were recorded more frequently in women than in men. Mental health experts suggest that the combined impact of domestic responsibilities, workplace pressure, caregiving roles, and social expectations can affect women's mental health.
**Minimal gender disparity in respiratory diseases**
The difference between men and women regarding cases of respiratory diseases was found to be minimal. Conditions such as upper respiratory tract infections, the common cold, and throat ailments were recorded at roughly similar levels in both groups. This indicates that certain infectious and seasonal diseases do not show significant variation based on gender.
