SARMI – Residents of Tafarewar Village in Sarmi Regency, Papua, have decorated their main gate and surrounding area with Argentina national football team themes to welcome the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday (June 7).
The transformation quickly caught the attention of passersby. From a distance, the village gate stands out with the large inscription “ARGENTINA.” Decorations featuring the Argentine flag, World Cup trophy images, footballs, and three championship stars reinforce the new identity of the area, now affectionately called “Argentina Village” by locals.
This festive look is the result of collaboration and collective effort among the residents. People from all walks of life joined hands to decorate the gate as a show of support for their favourite team ahead of the world’s biggest football event. The spirit of togetherness is visible in every detail placed around the village entrance.
According to one resident, who preferred not to be named, on Sunday (June 7, 2026), Argentina represents more than just a football team for them — it is a symbol of perseverance, hard work, and an unyielding spirit that inspires many.
The presence of La Albiceleste-inspired ornaments in Tafarewar Village has become a way for locals to express their love for the sport that is deeply cherished across Papua.
Not only the main gate, but the World Cup atmosphere is also felt throughout the village. Argentine flags wave proudly in front of homes, while several youths have begun planning public viewing events of the matches once the tournament kicks off. The community’s enthusiasm continues to grow as the prestigious competition draws near.
This phenomenon demonstrates football’s remarkable power to unite people. Differences in age, occupation, or background do not hinder Tafarewar villagers from gathering and sharing the same passion for supporting their beloved team.
The unique character of Tafarewar Village has also begun attracting visitors from neighbouring villages in Sarmi Regency. Many come to see the decorations firsthand, making the gate a favourite spot for photos and memorable moments with family and friends.
For the local community, “Argentina Village” is not merely about supporting a World Cup participant. More importantly, the decorations stand as a symbol of unity, creativity, and pride, showing how a simple yet meaningful initiative can bring joy and strengthen community bonds.
Carrying the spirit of “Winning Together, Losing as Brothers,” Tafarewar Village has become more than just a small settlement in Sarmi — it serves as an inspiring example of how sport can foster happiness and social harmony. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the village stands as living proof that football fever has reached Papua, uniting its people through a shared passion.
