The clash between the Netherlands and Japan concluded without a winner as both sides shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw in their opening Group F match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Netherlands national football team and Japan's Blue Samurai delivered an intense battle in their first Group F encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Japan maintaining their impressive record against European opposition.

The Group F opener featured a high-profile showdown between the Netherlands and Japan at the Dallas Stadium in Arrington on Monday (15 June 2026) in the early hours of Indian Standard Time.

The much-anticipated big match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

The Netherlands found the net through Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville, while Japan responded with goals from Keito Nakamura and Daichi Kamada.

The draw against Ronald Koeman’s squad extended Japan’s unbeaten streak against European teams, a run that has continued since 2019.

With this result, Japan remain undefeated in their last eight meetings with European opponents.

Both sides fielded their strongest lineups for the Group F opener. The Dutch team, known as De Oranje, lined up in a 4-3-3 formation featuring a front trio of Donyell Malen, Crysencio Summerville, and Cody Gakpo.

Meanwhile, the Blue Samurai deployed a 3-4-2-1 setup, with Ayase Ueda leading the attack, supported by Daizen Maeda and Takefusa Kubo.

The match turned competitive immediately after the referee’s opening whistle. The Netherlands came close to scoring within three minutes through a close-range attempt by Malen, but Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a brilliant save.

Both teams continued to attack with intensity and defend solidly, keeping the scoreline goalless through the first 20 minutes of play.

Ronald Koeman’s men dominated possession, controlling much of the game’s tempo. The Netherlands created another chance in the 33rd minute when Malen’s header from a corner narrowly missed the target.

As the first half neared its end, Japan increased their attacking pressure, with efforts from Keito Nakamura and Daizen Maeda missing the mark. The opening half closed with a 0-0 scoreline.

In the second half, the Netherlands continued their attacking approach and finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. Captain Virgil van Dijk headed in a cross from his Liverpool teammate Ryan Gravenberch, with the ball bouncing off the turf and post before finding the back of the net.

Just six minutes later, Japan equalised through Keito Nakamura, who fired a precise shot from outside the box after receiving a pass from Kubo, beating Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbuggen to make it 1-1.

The parity didn’t last long, as in the 64th minute, the Netherlands regained the lead. Summerville latched onto another Gravenberch pass, dribbled in from the left side of the box, and curled a beautiful shot past Suzuki to make it 2-1.

Spurred by that goal, Japan pressed harder and their persistence paid off in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada headed home a cross from Koki Ogawa, levelling the score once again at 2-2.

The final whistle confirmed the 2-2 draw, with both teams taking a single point from their opening match.
