A number of managers have turned down the opportunity to replace Massimiliano Allegri at AC Milan, including Austria national team coach Ralf Rangnick.
Rangnick clearly explained his reasons for rejecting the Milan offer, both explicitly and implicitly. The Rossoneri are currently undergoing a major overhaul within their management structure.
The sweeping changes included the dismissal of head coach Massimiliano Allegri, CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who serves as the club’s special adviser, has retained his position.
This restructuring follows AC Milan’s failure to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The club from the fashion capital could only finish fifth in the final Serie A standings, having been overtaken by Como 1907.
To fill these crucial and strategic positions, AC Milan have been moving quickly in their recruitment process.
One of the main targets for the technical director and sporting director roles was Ralf Rangnick.
However, Rangnick remains under contract with the Austria national team, who are competing in the 2026 World Cup.
Reports suggest that Milan had already initiated contact and held negotiations with Rangnick.
Nevertheless, the German coach chose not to reach an agreement with the Italian giants.
Rangnick admitted that there had been communication between him and the 19-time Serie A champions.
However, Milan reportedly failed to provide clarity regarding his role and responsibilities at the club.
This lack of transparency is believed to be the reason Rangnick decided against moving to San Siro.
“Three weeks ago, there was contact with Milan, and we had several discussions,” Rangnick stated in an interview with Krone.
“From the start, I made it clear that I wanted clarity before the World Cup—for myself, the team, the country, the Austrian Football Association, and my players.”
“This was communicated very clearly at the beginning.”
“However, there has been no clear response from AC Milan,” added the 67-year-old coach.
Following his rejection of Milan’s approach, Ralf Rangnick extended his contract with the Austria national team until 2028.
The Austrian Football Association (OFB) confirmed the contract extension.
The agreement binds the former Manchester United interim coach until the end of 2027, with an automatic extension to 2028 if Austria qualify for the European Championship.
Rangnick’s decision to renew his commitment with Austria was also influenced by the uncertainty surrounding Milan’s offer.
As a result, AC Milan must now search for alternative candidates to fill their vacant director roles.
The club has recently been strongly linked with Ruben Amorim, who is rumoured to be the next coach for Mike Maignan and his teammates.
Coincidentally, Amorim is currently unemployed after being dismissed by Manchester United in early January 2026.
Milan Now Eyeing Amorim
AC Milan appear increasingly desperate in their search for a new coach ahead of the 2026–2027 season, as reports suggest they are now targeting a manager who had an unsuccessful spell at Manchester United.
As mid-June approaches, Milan still have no head coach following the sacking of Massimiliano Allegri at the end of last season.
Unfortunately for the Rossoneri, their failure to qualify for the Champions League has made them an unattractive destination for top managerial candidates.
Previously, two coaches—Andoni Iraola and Xavi Hernandez—had already turned down Milan’s advances.
Iraola eventually joined Liverpool, while Xavi chose to wait for an opportunity to manage a national team after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.
Now, Milan have lost another target.
Ralf Rangnick decided to stay on with the Austria national team until 2028 rather than accept Milan’s offer to become technical director.
Had Rangnick joined, it was believed that he would have appointed Oliver Glasner as the new coach of the Rossoneri.
Another name linked with Milan is Matthias Jaissle, but he remains under contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli.
To activate Jaissle’s release clause, Milan would need to pay €6 million.
Amid growing frustration, Milan seem to be scrambling in their search for the next candidate.
Out of nowhere, Ruben Amorim has emerged as their latest target.
Amorim has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United on 5 January.
The former Sporting CP coach recorded only 24 wins from 63 matches in charge of the Red Devils.
His win rate of just 38 percent is the lowest among permanent Manchester United managers since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Following Amorim’s exit, United managed to secure a Champions League spot for next season under Michael Carrick’s leadership.
According to TMW, AC Milan have already reached out to Amorim’s representatives.
The Italian club reportedly offered him a two-year contract with an option for a third year.
The deal is said to be worth €4 million per season.
As reported by Milannews, owner Gerry Cardinale and club adviser Zlatan Ibrahimovic are both fond of Amorim, believing he has the ability to build a strong long-term project.
Ruben Amorim’s chances of joining Milan appear to be quite high, as he has reportedly rejected an offer to replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica.
However, Milan’s decision to pursue Amorim raises questions—if they truly believed in his potential, the Portuguese coach should have been their target from the beginning.
Meanwhile, Milan fans may be growing increasingly frustrated with Ibrahimovic, who seems more focused on his role as a World Cup 2026 commentator than his responsibilities at the club.
