The intense Group H clash between Iran and New Zealand in the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood.

Iran started the game aggressively, launching several early attacks that tested New Zealand's defensive line within the opening five minutes. Aria Yousefi made a quick run down the right flank, but his shot was successfully blocked by the opposing goalkeeper.

Despite being under pressure for the first seven minutes, New Zealand stunned Iran when Elijah Just found the back of the net. The goal came from a slick three-man combination that tore through Iran's defense, with Just finishing with a half-volley that went past Alireza Beiranvand into the right corner of the goal.

That single attack produced an immediate goal, showcasing New Zealand’s pragmatic approach, which caught Iran completely off guard. In the 11th minute, Sarpreet Singh attempted a solo run, but his shot from inside the penalty box went narrowly wide.

Momentum shifted as New Zealand began to control the tempo, forcing Iran on the back foot until the 15th minute. In the 17th minute, New Zealand defender Finn Surman pushed Sajad Moghanlou inside the penalty area, but the referee waved away appeals for a spot-kick.

Iran came close to equalizing in the 22nd minute when Mehdi Taremi’s counterattack effort struck the post. A critical blunder from New Zealand’s goalkeeper almost gifted Iran a goal in the 28th minute.

Iran finally restored parity in the 32nd minute through a well-worked move from the left wing. Ramin Rezaeian surged into the New Zealand penalty box and poked home during a goalmouth scramble. His delicate chip left the New Zealand keeper with no chance, levelling the score at 1-1.

New Zealand had a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the 43rd minute with a free-kick, but Chris Wood’s effort lacked power. Six additional minutes were added at the end of the half; Iran even managed to find the net in the 45+5 minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The teams went into the break with the score tied at 1-1.

Iran resumed the second half with renewed dominance, while New Zealand adopted a more possession-based approach compared to the first period. Their tactical adjustment paid off in the 54th minute when a neat one-two between Chris Wood and Elijah Just culminated in Just scoring his second goal of the match, putting New Zealand ahead 2-1.

Iran responded almost immediately as Amin Mohebi’s header forced a brilliant save from Max Crocombe, silencing the Iranian supporters in the Los Angeles stands. However, Mohebi soon became New Zealand’s nightmare when his powerful header in the 63rd minute found the back of the net, equalizing the game once more at 2-2.

The goal came from a precise cross delivered from the left, with Mohebi timing his header perfectly to beat the goalkeeper. The match intensified as both teams traded attacks from the 75th minute onward, with neither side willing to concede ground.

As the final ten minutes of regulation time approached, the pace remained high though much of the play was concentrated in midfield. With the score still level at the 90th minute, the referee added five minutes of stoppage time, but neither team managed to score again, sealing a 2-2 draw at the final whistle.
