PEKANBARU – The Argentina vs Algeria clash will serve as the opening match in Group J of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match is scheduled to take place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, kicking off at 08:00 WIB.

Acting Chairman of the National Paralympic Committee Indonesia (NPCI) Riau Province, Indra Warman, predicts that Argentina will edge past Algeria with a narrow 2-1 victory.

According to Indra, every team that has qualified for the World Cup represents the best from their respective regions. Although Argentina have more experience on the world stage, Algeria’s motivation and fighting spirit are expected to make the contest an exciting one.

“Individually, Argentina’s quality, especially with Lionel Messi, gives them an advantage. Therefore, I predict Argentina will win 2-1,” Indra told Tribunpekanbaru.com on Tuesday (16 June 2026).

However, Indra also warned that Argentina must remain cautious against Algeria’s attacking line. The North African side are known for their productivity and lethal transition play.

Under head coach Vladimir Petkovic, Les Fennecs were dominant during the qualifiers, scoring 24 goals and emerging as one of the new forces to watch in the tournament.

Indra also noted that the presence of captain Riyad Mahrez provides Algeria with creativity and leadership in breaking down opposition defences. The team are highly skilled in utilising quick transitions from defence to attack, exploiting spaces when opponents lose possession.

Argentina vs Algeria Match Preview

Defending champions Argentina will face North African representatives Algeria. Argentina arrive with the goal of retaining their world title, while Algeria aim to cause an upset and boost their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

Still managed by Lionel Scaloni, Argentina have retained most of their World Cup-winning core. Lionel Messi is expected to start and could make history as the first player to appear in six editions of the World Cup.

Argentina have shown remarkable consistency in recent months and remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Petkovic’s Algeria come into the tournament full of confidence after a string of positive results in the lead-up to the competition.

Led by Riyad Mahrez and supported by a group of talented young players, Algeria possess blistering counter-attacking speed that could trouble Argentina’s defence.

They are unbeaten in recent fixtures and are determined to recreate the kind of shock that saw Argentina lose to Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup.

Key Factors to Watch

Messi vs Algeria’s Defence – Lionel Messi’s creativity will be Argentina’s main source of attacking opportunities. If Algeria fail to contain his movement, their defensive line could come under immense pressure.

Algeria’s Quick Transitions – The North African side boast rapid wingers and forwards. Their counter-attacks will be their primary weapon against Argentina’s high defensive line.

Experience on the Big Stage – Argentina’s experience and championship mentality far exceed that of Algeria’s. This factor often becomes decisive in the opening matches of major tournaments.

On paper, Argentina still have the stronger squad. However, opening matches are rarely straightforward, and Algeria’s solid organisation and high motivation could make things difficult.

Messi’s ingenuity could be the deciding factor, while Argentina’s midfield depth is expected to control the tempo of the game. Algeria are capable of putting up a strong fight, but Argentina’s experience and quality should be enough to secure their first three points.

It will be intriguing to see whether Argentina can claim their first victory of the 2026 World Cup campaign.
