Rafael Leao Faces Disappointment as Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona Turn Down Move for AC Milan Forward

Heartbreak continues for Rafael Leao as his future at AC Milan grows increasingly uncertain, with top European clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, and Barcelona reportedly rejecting the opportunity to sign the Portuguese star. With a visible dip in form and mounting frustration among supporters, the Serie A side is struggling to attract buyers willing to meet their steep asking price ahead of a decisive summer transfer window.

European heavyweights walk away

Leao is set for a challenging off-season after Arsenal, United, and Barcelona all declined the chance to bring him in. As per reports from Sportitalia, both AC Milan and the player’s representatives actively offered the 26-year-old attacker to several long-time admirers, yet their approaches were met with little enthusiasm.

Leao, who joined AC Milan from Lille in 2019 for €49.5 million, has been a consistent contributor of goals and assists over the years. However, interest from abroad has noticeably waned. The three major clubs that once tracked him closely have now chosen not to commit the considerable financial resources needed to lure him away from San Siro, leaving Milan in a difficult position as they attempt to revamp their squad.

Milan reconsider valuation

Although the Portugal international’s contract includes a massive €120 million release clause, reports suggest that the Rossoneri may be willing to accept a reduced offer in the region of €80 million to make a sale possible. With his current deal set to run until 2028 and no new extension on the horizon, Milan see this upcoming transfer window as their last realistic chance to secure a substantial fee.

This readiness to negotiate stems from Leao’s recent struggles under head coach Max Allegri. The manager’s 3-5-2 formation forces the winger into a central attacking role, which has limited his natural flair. Leao has managed 10 goals across 30 competitive fixtures this season, but he has not found the net in Serie A since March 1, significantly dulling his overall influence on the pitch.

Fan frustration reaches boiling point

Supporters at San Siro have grown increasingly impatient, with Leao becoming a target of repeated criticism. The tactical mismatch has amplified tensions, culminating in a disastrous outing against Atalanta on May 5, when he squandered a clear scoring chance and was met with loud boos from the crowd. That 3-2 defeat appeared to mark a breaking point for many fans, though it was not the first time discontent had been voiced.

Just a month earlier, Leao faced similar jeers during a 3-0 loss to Udinese and was whistled heavily when substituted for Christopher Nkunku in the 80th minute of a goalless draw against Juventus on April 26. Now nearing his 27th birthday, the forward is no longer viewed as a developing talent but rather as an experienced player struggling to justify his diminishing market value.

What lies ahead for Leao?

AC Milan currently sit third in Serie A with 70 points, level with fourth-placed Roma, and must defeat Cagliari at San Siro in their final league fixture to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

Looking beyond domestic concerns, the club hopes that Leao can deliver a standout performance at the upcoming World Cup, which could revive interest from potential suitors in the Premier League or La Liga and reopen the door to a high-profile transfer.
