Many traditional handicrafts have been preserved from generation to generation in various regions of India. These arts reflect the local history, culture and skill of the artisans. Geographical Indication (GI) recognition of such handicrafts is an official acknowledgment of the authenticity and characteristics of the craft. The recent GI recognition of Jasdan Patari handicrafts in Gujarat is considered as an important step towards the preservation of such cultural heritage.

GI Registry has approved Geographical Indication (GI) registration for Jasdan Patari, a traditional handicraft of Gujarat. This has become an important milestone for the artisans of Jasdan block in Rajkot district. This unique craft, which has been preserved for generations, is a symbol of Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has provided assistance for this GI registration under its Gramya Vikas Nidhi (GVN). This assistance is provided for raising public awareness of GI products, documentation and GI application process. This registration process is done through Center for Environment Education (CEE).

Earlier, NABARD had provided similar support to two other products in Gujarat – Ajrakh Block Print from Kutch (approved in 2021-22) and Amalsad Chiku from Navsari (approved in 2020-21). GI registration of both these products has been successfully completed.

Obtaining a GI tag provides legal protection to genuine handicraft products from counterfeit or imitation products, strengthens their market recognition and provides better opportunities for domestic as well as international trade. In case of agricultural products, it makes market linkage more effective and easier for farmers.

NABARD said that this recognition will promote the preservation and promotion of traditional knowledge. Also, it will significantly help in increasing livelihood opportunities in rural areas and ensuring greater participation of youth as well as women artisans.

This recognition of Jasdan Patari handicrafts is not limited to one product but is also important for the future of the rural economy, traditional skills and local artisans. Such initiatives will help preserve India’s diverse cultural heritage and create an independent identity in the global market.
