Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martinez, and Julian Alvarez are all fully fit and ready to feature in the team’s 2026 World Cup opener. Scaloni hailed the influence of the 'monumental' Inter Miami forward ahead of their Group J encounter against Algeria.

Champions Receive a Timely Fitness Boost

The defending champions enter their opening Group J fixture in top form, having recorded seven straight wins in preparation for the tournament. Any lingering concerns surrounding Messi’s minor hamstring issue, Alvarez’s ankle problem, and Martinez’s fractured ring finger have now been resolved. Scaloni reported a completely healthy 26-man squad, with only veteran defender Nicolas Tagliafico requiring final evaluation before the starting line-up is confirmed.

Scaloni Urges Composure Before Algeria Clash

Amid heavy global expectations, Scaloni called for calmness and perspective, while praising Messi’s enduring influence and sharing positive updates on squad fitness.

He explained: “Calm because it’s just a game of football. We have the experience from the last World Cup — the first game is not decisive. It’s important, yes, but everything doesn’t end with the first match.”

“We are good, we are calm. We’re facing a solid team with good players, but we are in a good moment. Everyone wants to see [Leo] Messi on the pitch. He excites everyone, not just Argentinians.”

“From my perspective, it will always be the same. I don’t see anything negative. He has played under different circumstances but has always been there for us. He has always been monumental, and now even more so. He looks in great shape.”

“Emiliano is fine and available for tomorrow. If he continues as he did in training over the past two days, I believe he will play. Julian also had an ankle issue, but his recovery has gone well, and he’s available and an option for selection.”

Squad Depth Creates Selection Challenge

With key players cleared to play, Scaloni admitted that finalising the starting eleven remains a tricky task given the wealth of talent at his disposal. He commented: “I’ve always found it difficult to pick the starting eleven because of the quality within this national team, even beyond injuries — which we thankfully don’t have now.”

“There are no injured players. We’ll just keep an eye on Nico Tagliafico’s situation to ensure he can train with the squad, but essentially, everyone is available. The only challenge I face is leaving top players out, but maintaining balance is key. We play with eleven, and we aim for equilibrium, even if it means someone has to sit out.”

Tough Defensive Test for the Title Holders

Argentina will need to overcome a disciplined Algeria side that has gone 393 minutes without conceding a goal. This opening test will immediately gauge the world champions’ attacking sharpness before they face Austria and Jordan in subsequent Group J fixtures. Securing an early victory is essential for Argentina to establish control in their title defence from the outset.
