Explained: Why Casemiro’s Move to Inter Miami Has Been Put on Hold as the Departing Manchester United Midfielder Eyes Lionel Messi Reunion in MLS

Casemiro’s anticipated transfer to Inter Miami has encountered an unforeseen delay owing to Major League Soccer (MLS) roster regulations. The Brazilian midfielder, who is set to leave Manchester United, is reportedly eager for a move to Florida. However, a dispute concerning discovery rights with LA Galaxy is currently preventing the deal from being completed as Casemiro evaluates the next stage of his career.

Disagreement Over Discovery Rights Delays Miami Move

The proposed transfer of Casemiro to Inter Miami has been put on hold due to a disagreement between the club and LA Galaxy regarding MLS discovery rights. The 32-year-old will officially depart from Manchester United at the end of the month once his contract expires and has been exploring opportunities within MLS. Inter Miami have emerged as the frontrunners to secure his signature, but league rules have complicated the process.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, LA Galaxy had registered their interest in Casemiro before Inter Miami and thereby gained his discovery rights. Consequently, Galaxy are said to be demanding £750,000 (approximately $1 million) in exchange for those rights. Until both clubs reach a settlement, Casemiro’s next move cannot be confirmed.

MLS Regulations Pose Another Challenge

It is understood that Casemiro and his representatives had previously engaged in discussions with LA Galaxy, who made an offer in an attempt to lure the former Real Madrid star to California. However, after travelling to Miami with his family, Casemiro reportedly decided that Inter Miami was his preferred destination. The chance to play alongside Lionel Messi is believed to have been a decisive factor in his choice.

Discovery Rights System Under Renewed Criticism

This situation is not an isolated one within MLS. Clubs frequently negotiate compensation deals to resolve disputes over discovery rights and finalise player signings. A recent case involved Marco Reus, whose rights were initially held by Charlotte FC before his move to LA Galaxy. Charlotte had sought $800,000 but eventually agreed to $400,000 in General Allocation Money, enabling the transfer to go through.

Casemiro’s situation appears likely to require a similar compromise. The discovery rights system has long faced criticism from within MLS, with several clubs considering it outdated and difficult to explain to players and agents accustomed to European football structures.

Miami Pushes for Resolution

Inter Miami must now come to terms with LA Galaxy to remove the final barrier to Casemiro’s arrival. The Brazilian midfielder is currently representing his national team at the World Cup. A financial settlement regarding the discovery rights seems the most probable route to finalising the move. Meanwhile, Manchester United are already preparing for life after Casemiro. The club are reportedly targeting West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, while Atalanta’s Ederson is expected to move to Old Trafford in a £38 million deal.
