WhatsApp frequently introduces new features to enhance the user experience. It has now been revealed that, following the 'View Once' feature for photos and videos, the company is working on a similar feature for text messages. Once this feature rolls out, messages will automatically disappear after being viewed once; it is currently under development and could be released soon.
According to WABetaInfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp development, indications of this feature have been spotted in beta versions for both Android and iOS. However, the feature is not yet available for testing. The report notes that the company aims to give users greater control when sharing sensitive information.
How will this new feature work?
According to reports, the feature will activate when a user long-presses the send button after typing a message, revealing a "Send as View Once" option. This allows the text to be sent in a format that the recipient can read only once.
Once viewed, the message will vanish and cannot be seen again. Much like the 'View Once' feature for photos and videos, the recipient will be unable to copy, forward, or share the message. To minimize the chances of the message being saved, screenshots and screen recordings might also be blocked. This feature is expected to work in both personal and group chats, though it is unlikely to be available for Channels. The company has not yet officially confirmed any details regarding this feature.
