England head coach Thomas Tuchel has provided a clear explanation for omitting Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer from his final 26-man squad for the World Cup. The German manager remained steadfast in his principle of selecting players based on current performance rather than reputation, emphasising that the versatile attacker had not delivered at the required international standard.
Chelsea forward left out
The star of the 2024 European Championship became one of the biggest surprises in Friday’s squad announcement, joining Manchester City’s Phil Foden among the notable exclusions. Despite his impressive reputation in domestic football, Palmer suffered due to what Tuchel viewed as a decline in sharpness and overall consistency at club level. This bold decision has sparked concern among fans over England’s creative depth behind captain Harry Kane.
Tuchel explains lack of influence
Addressing the scrutiny following the announcement, Tuchel elaborated on how internal performance data and recurring fitness issues undermined Palmer’s role within the national setup.
Tuchel stated: “I think he (Palmer) suffers from, first of all, a lack of individual form within the club; he was not as decisive or as influential as he was in previous seasons, throughout the entire campaign. Secondly, he was not very influential with us. His record with us was just not outstanding, not good enough to make him a guaranteed inclusion. That is simply the reality.”
Reputation overlooked for team balance
The Chelsea midfielder has struggled to replicate his clinical club form at international level, failing to record any goal contributions in his three appearances under Tuchel.
Explaining his reasoning for excluding high-profile names rather than forcing them into unfamiliar roles, Tuchel continued: “He pulled out several times, had to pull out several times due to injuries, and when he was in camp he did not have the impact we all expected.
“I think his personality helps him to stay calm in big moments and be decisive, but to have those moments, you must be in rhythm and influential within the group — and he simply hasn’t shown that consistently.
“It was one of the hardest phone calls, and certainly one of the most high-profile omissions. But I refuse to select players because of their name, and I refuse to play them out of position just to fit them in. I prefer to make the tough call early, accept it, and then move forward with the rest of the group.”
Pressure mounts ahead of the tournament
Tuchel’s reshaped squad must now quickly develop cohesion before heading to North America for a demanding group-stage campaign. The team will face significant pressure to justify the manager’s selection strategy during their upcoming warm-up matches and main tournament fixtures. Meanwhile, Palmer will have the summer off to focus on recovery and physical conditioning before rejoining Chelsea under their new manager, Xabi Alonso, at Stamford Bridge.
