Manchester United are gearing up for an eagerly anticipated 2026/27 season following a strong conclusion to their 2025/26 campaign. The Red Devils experienced a remarkable turnaround after Michael Carrick took charge in mid-January, embarking on an impressive run that secured them third place in the Premier League standings.

The club’s achievement means they will return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence. With INEOS overseeing operations, preparations are underway to strengthen the squad, particularly in midfield, where reinforcements are a top priority.

Further signings are anticipated as the Red Devils aim to compete across four competitions next season. However, significant developments are also taking place off the pitch, with the club confirming a major renovation project at Old Trafford.

As per an announcement on United’s official website, the Old Trafford pitch is undergoing a full-scale renovation before the new season begins. The statement reads: “For the first time in 14 years, since the summer before the 2012/13 season, the sacred turf at M16 is being completely dug up and stripped back to its base.”

“Under the guidance of award-winning groundsman Tony Sinclair and his team of specialists, the surface will be regrown as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing player safety and improving water drainage.”

Despite already boasting one of the finest playing surfaces in England, which has consistently stood up to Manchester’s challenging weather, United are investing further to ensure optimum playing conditions and a better overall experience for players.

The club also confirmed that all waste produced during this process will be “recycled and reused within the trade.”

The report elaborates that the Old Trafford surface is a hybrid pitch containing 96% natural grass reinforced with 4% synthetic fibres, explaining: “Our pitch is a hybrid surface made up of 96% natural grass interwoven with 4% artificial fibres stitched deep into the soil.”

“This technique, used by top clubs worldwide, allows natural grass to integrate with synthetic material, resulting in a highly durable, even, and well-drained surface.”

Additionally, United revealed that this will be the last full regrowth of the pitch at the current Old Trafford site, noting: “It is being regrown from scratch for the final time at the existing stadium, with plans for a new ground in development over the coming years.”

Besides the turf renovation, the club is also prioritising safety enhancements, stating: “The grass is being extended to create a uniform surface along the pitchside, and protective covering is being added to the brickwork at the base of Old Trafford’s iconic slope.”
