AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric is ‘certain’ to rejoin Real Madrid once his time in Italy draws to a close, according to Croatian football great Davor Suker. The former striker stated that the veteran playmaker is destined to reunite with the Spanish giants following the World Cup, extending his illustrious 597-match legacy in Madrid.
Davor Suker suggests a Real Madrid return is imminent
In a recent exclusive conversation on Radio MARCA’s programme La Tribu, Suker gave a strong indication about Modric’s future. The Croatian legend remarked that Real Madrid continues to hold a special place in Modric’s heart, and that a reunion could be on the horizon after his successful spell in Serie A. Although the midfielder has made a significant impact with AC Milan, it remains uncertain whether he will exercise his option to stay with the Rossoneri or hang up his boots after the World Cup.
When asked about Modric’s next move, Suker hinted that the Santiago Bernabeu remains a likely destination. “Now they asked me where he is going to continue, either in Milan or in Madrid... I believe that something is going to happen with Real Madrid,” Suker commented.
A legendary record in Madrid
If Modric does return to the Spanish capital, it would further enhance his already iconic career. During his earlier tenure with Real Madrid, he featured in 597 games and netted 43 goals across all competitions. His list of honours is extraordinary — six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and two Copa del Rey crowns. On the personal front, his outstanding 2018 season saw him collect the Ballon d'Or, The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, and the UEFA Best Player in Europe accolade. He has also secured five UEFA Super Cups, four FIFA Club World Cups, five Spanish Super Cups, and the 2024-25 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, cementing his legendary standing at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Awaiting the end of the World Cup
The timing of this much-anticipated move seems to hinge on Modric’s international duties. Speaking about the possibility, Suker explained, “He is definitely going to return, but I do not know in what way... We are going to wait for the World Cup to pass and see what happens.”
Modric is currently leading Croatia in Group L at the World Cup. Their campaign begins against England on Wednesday, followed by crucial contests against Panama and Ghana. These matches will command his full attention before any official decision about his club career is announced.
What lies ahead for the Croatian star?
All eyes are now on Modric’s performances on the global stage. Once the World Cup concludes, an official statement about his next move is expected soon after. Suker, however, kept things light-hearted when pressed for details, saying with a laugh, “I cannot speak any more, I cannot speak any more, my friend. Leave it a little in the air, you cannot say everything.” Whatever the exact role, a grand return to Real Madrid appears to be waiting for the Croatian maestro.
