The New York Knicks’ triumph in the NBA Finals on Saturday night — their first championship since 1973 — could serve as an unexpected boost for the United States at this World Cup.
The entire nation, particularly New York, had been captivated by the NBA Finals, where the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 to end a 53-year wait for the title.
With basketball fever gripping the Big Apple, many sports fans had only partially tuned into the early stages of the World Cup. However, with the NBA season concluded, attention is now shifting firmly towards football.
Former England striker Ian Wright believes that with focus now fully on the tournament, Mauricio Pochettino’s United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) are capable of going deep into the competition — potentially as far as the semi-finals.
The USMNT began their home World Cup campaign impressively, securing a dominant 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles. Wright was particularly encouraged by what he saw from the hosts.
Folarin Balogun struck twice, while Gio Reyna and an own goal completed a commanding opening performance for the Americans.
Speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo, Wright said, “I think America will get to the semi-finals.”
He elaborated, “The reason I say that is because they have a solid back four, midfielders who play at a high level, and as we saw with Flo Balogun, they have a forward capable of scoring goals.”
Appearing at the adidas fan zone in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Wright added, “They now have a fan base that really understands the game. Once the Knicks’ championship was sealed, everyone started saying, ‘Right, it’s time to focus on the World Cup.’”
Wright continued, “If they can maintain that momentum and keep playing with such energy, especially with a striker taking chances like Balogun did, then they have every chance of reaching the semi-finals — perhaps even meeting England there.”
The USMNT now face Australia, who also started their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey. Both teams are aware that another win will guarantee a spot in the last 32.
Should the United States reach the semi-finals, it would mark their best-ever World Cup performance, surpassing their quarter-final finish in 2002.
