Jurgen Klopp is reportedly facing a major internal challenge at RB Leipzig, as the club’s managing director of sport, Marcel Schafer, is said to be contemplating his resignation from the Bundesliga outfit. The discord stems from Klopp’s significant involvement in the removal of head coach Ole Werner, which has effectively undermined Schafer’s authority within the club’s hierarchy.
Corporate hierarchy takes control over management
The Saxony-based side abruptly decided to part ways with head coach Ole Werner and his coaching team, even though Werner’s contract was valid until 2027. As per reports from Bild, Schafer had previously defended the 38-year-old manager and successfully blocked his dismissal on two prior occasions. However, the ultimate decision came from Red Bull’s global corporate headquarters, where Klopp, serving as the global head of football, played a central role in pushing for the termination.
Internal stability under threat
The sudden managerial change has led to considerable political tension within the club, casting doubt over Schafer’s future role at Leipzig. According to Sky, three potential outcomes are currently being discussed: Schafer could resign, be dismissed, or continue in his existing capacity. The same report suggests that intense disagreements took place behind closed doors regarding the decision to sack Werner, with Schafer reportedly dissatisfied with how the process unfolded.
Financial and professional strain
The boardroom discord adds further complexity to what is already a costly managerial change. Leipzig could face substantial financial repercussions unless a mutual settlement is achieved. Sky reports that if the coaching staff’s contracts are not terminated by mutual agreement, the club will be obligated to pay over €3 million in wages. Amid this uncertainty, Schafer is being linked to other opportunities, with FAZ identifying him as a possible successor at Eintracht Frankfurt should Markus Krosche move on.
Leadership transition on the horizon
Red Bull’s top management now faces the urgent task of clarifying Schafer’s position before his potential exit disrupts planning for the upcoming summer transfer window. Klopp, meanwhile, must manage this growing internal tension while also fulfilling his external commitments as a television pundit for Magenta during the ongoing 2026 World Cup. Securing a cooperative head coach who can build upon last season’s third-place Bundesliga finish will be a crucial challenge for Leipzig’s leadership as they attempt to restore stability amid the current upheaval.
