Ever heard of a waterfall that looks like a birde? It’s another surprise of nature waiting to be explored. This stunning waterfall is hidden well amid the dramatic landscapes of northern Peru and is counted among the country’s most intriguing natural wonders. It is a waterfall so uniquely shaped that it resembles a bride dressed in a flowing white gown. Sounds amazing, right? The waterfall is locally known as Catarata Velo de la Novia , or the “Waterfall of the Bride.” The waterfall has captured the imagination of travellers from across the globe.

Let’s find out more about this unique waterfall:

Location

The waterfall is located in the Cajamarca Region of northern Peru close to the district of Namora. It is surrounded by rural Huanico-Pachachaca communities. Since its discovery, the waterfall remains crowded by photographers, nature lovers and adventure seekers. Its fame grew rapidly after images and videos of the formation went viral online.

Why is it called the “Waterfall of the Bride”?

The waterfall earned such a beautiful yet unique sobriquet just because of how the water looks while flowing over the dark rocky cliff. The water, instead of falling in a single vertical stream, cascades and spreads naturally across the rock face. It creates a naturally striking illusion of a bride covered in a long white gown and veil.

From far away, the waterfall even appears to have a defined upper body along with a flowing skirt. It is also one of the most unusual examples of pareidolia, which means natural formations resemble familiar objects or figures.

Not the only one

While there are many waterfalls worldwide which are related to bridal veils, Peru’s “Waterfall of the Bride” stands out because its entire formation resembles the silhouette of a human figure rather than simply a veil.

A hidden gem in Peru

Unlike severally commercialised attractions, the Waterfall of the Bride retains a relatively untouched atmosphere. Visitors often come from far away lands just to witness and admire the unique formation.

How to reach the Waterfall of the Bride

The nearest major city is Cajamarca. Regular domestic flights from Lima ply for Cajamarca. There are long-distance bus connections from several Peruvian cities.

From Cajamarca, travellers can drive to Namora which leads to the waterfall area. The final approach may involve a short walk depending on weather. It is advisable to hire a local driver or join a guided excursion, especially for first-time visitors.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit would be during the monsoons. But roads may become muddy. So sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

While Peru is celebrated for its iconic attractions such as Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, the Waterfall of the Bride offers a unique experience created by nature.
