An adventure awaits for trekking enthusiasts! Industrialist Harsh Goenka recently shared a video on social media which has sparked fresh curiosity among adventure lovers. Calling it “one of the most difficult treks in Maharashtra”, the video Goenka shared shows trekkers climbing the stairs which look so straight that it makes your head spin for a second. The video instantly resonated with thousands, and for good reason. And this trek is of none other than the famous Harihar Fort perched high in the Sahyadri ranges. The trek is known for its scary rock-cut staircase which appears almost vertical. It is also among India’s most photographed trekking destinations.

Location


Harihar Fort is situated in Nashik district of Maharashtra. It is located close to Trimbakeshwar around 40 km from Nashik. From Mumbai, it is roughly 160 km away. Also known as Harshagad or Harihargad, the fort sits at an elevation of around 1,120 metres (3,676 feet) and was built during the Yadava period. There was a time when not many people knew about it. But then social media happened and the hill fort became a hot adventure tourism destination among trekkers.

What makes Harihar Fort stand out from other hill forts in Maharashtra is its stunning staircase carved directly into the rock face. The stone steps rise nearly 80 degrees, creating the illusion of climbing a ladder rather than a traditional staircase. There are handholds for support, but the ascent demands high concentration and balance. It can be easily said that the trek is not for faint hearted people. The videos available on different social media platforms often make the climb appear terrifying and only for experienced trekkers.

How to reach Harihar Fort


By air: The nearest airport is Nashik Airport, while Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport offers international connectivity. From either airport, taxis or buses are easily available.


By rail: The nearest major railway stations are Nashik Road and Igatpuri, both well connected to Mumbai, Pune and several Indian cities. Local taxis and shared vehicles are available onward.


By road: The fort is about four to five hours drive from Nashik. State transport buses and private vehicles are available.


Best time to visit


The post-monsoon and winter months from October to February are widely considered the best time to attempt the trek.


The monsoon season transforms the landscape into a spectacular sight but the steps get slippery increasing the level of risk.
