The BBC’s 3D viewing feature has produced one of the most unusual and unintentionally funny moments of the World Cup so far, as its digital recreation showed referee Felix Zwayer collapsing with cramp during the USA’s 2-0 win over Australia.

Toward the end of the match, Zwayer had to briefly halt play after suffering from cramp, prompting Australia’s Aiden O’Neill to rush over and assist the official with stretching exercises so that he could continue officiating.

The BBC’s 3D World Cup experience allows viewers to watch games from various perspectives, including those of individual players. When users select Aiden O’Neill’s viewpoint, the system renders a peculiar visual of Zwayer convulsing awkwardly on the turf, with his hands appearing to disappear as he receives treatment.

After clips of the moment circulated widely online, fans were left puzzled about the purpose of the new 3D feature. One Reddit user on the r/soccer forum, named Klynikal, joked, “Where can I watch the World Cup in PS1 graphics? This looks unintentionally hilarious.” Another user, Hans_Krebs_, humorously added, “Can someone explain why this even exists?”

Despite the confusion, some fans appeared intrigued by the novelty and began exploring the 3D service further in search of more eccentric animations from the tournament.

The BBC describes its 3D World Cup feature as an innovative way to experience the tournament, claiming it allows fans to take their passion for football “to the next level.” According to the broadcaster’s website, “The FIFA World Cup 3D Experience is a completely new way to watch the game, putting you right at the centre of the action.”

Supporters are able to replay matches, highlights, and key moments with full control of the camera angles, even choosing to view the action from the perspective of specific players on the pitch. Whether this immersive technology will become a fan favourite over the summer, however, remains uncertain.
