Diogo Dalot has disclosed that the Portugal national team conducted a comprehensive meeting before the World Cup to brace themselves for the inevitable social media scrutiny that follows any Cristiano Ronaldo performance. Even after a disappointing opening match, the Manchester United defender emphasised that the squad remains “unshakable” in their support for their iconic captain.
Portugal’s preparation for the media spotlight
Following a frustrating 1-1 draw with Congo DR in their World Cup opener, critics were quick to target both Portugal and their legendary leader. The result prompted a surge of negativity online, with pundits such as Thierry Henry suggesting that the team’s focus should shift from Ronaldo’s individual milestones to achieving collective success.
Dalot revealed that Roberto Martinez’s men had already anticipated such criticism. “It’s quite simple. Inside the dressing room, at our training ground, we had the opportunity before the World Cup to discuss in detail about this [social media and criticism],” Dalot explained. “It almost felt like we foresaw it coming. Naturally, when you have a squad like ours — particularly with a player of Cristiano’s stature — we needed to be prepared, a little more than usual.”
Standing united amid external pressure
The level of scrutiny surrounding Ronaldo is unmatched in world football, with every gesture or missed opportunity often turned into a talking point. Dalot insisted that the group’s unity has not been shaken by the external noise, asserting that the team remains committed to their ultimate dream of winning the World Cup for the first time in Portugal’s history.
Reflecting on the importance of that pre-tournament meeting, Dalot said: “Having that conversation before the World Cup helped us stay composed when the criticism came. It allowed us to send the message that this group is unbreakable — we knew what was coming. We understood that difficulties and criticism would appear… Sometimes unfair, sometimes inaccurate, and often exaggerated.”
Ronaldo’s unmatched composure under scrutiny
At 41, Ronaldo is well accustomed to the global spotlight, having led Portugal for over two decades. Dalot believes that the Al-Nassr star’s vast experience is his greatest strength, helping him maintain calm and focus while others might be distracted by the surrounding noise.
“Everyone knows how well Cristiano deals with criticism. He’s had over 20 years with the national team,” Dalot continued. “What he brings to the team is confidence. He reminds us that criticism is simply part of the game, especially given the level we’re competing at — one of the biggest, if not the biggest, tournaments in the world.”
All eyes on the crucial Uzbekistan encounter
Portugal now turn their attention to a decisive Group K clash against Uzbekistan on Tuesday. With qualification for the knockout rounds still uncertain after the opening draw, the team will once again look toward their captain to provide the spark that could reignite their campaign.
Dalot remains optimistic that the 1-1 result was only a minor stumble and that Ronaldo’s influence continues to be a driving force. “The confidence he gives us, and that we have in him, has never changed and never will,” the full-back said. “As long as he wears the national colours, he’ll always possess that ability and will always be ready to perform.”
