Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has swiftly refuted suggestions of a disagreement with team captain Mohamed Salah after substituting the former Liverpool icon during their opening match of the 2026 World Cup campaign against Belgium. Salah was taken off in the 76th minute with the score level at 1-1, a move that triggered speculation about a possible fallout between the star forward and his manager.

The substitution quickly became a talking point among fans and analysts. Salah had earlier assisted Emam Ashour’s goal before being replaced by promising Barcelona youngster Hamza Abdelkarim in the 76th minute. With the game finely balanced, Hassan’s decision to remove his captain appeared risky. However, the Egyptian manager strongly denied any internal issues, stressing that all 26 players in his squad are treated with equal respect as they prepare for their next group clash against New Zealand.

Speaking to the press, Hassan elaborated on his approach and praised Salah’s professionalism. He said, “Salah is a vital player for us, but all 26 players in the squad are equally important. Every player who has worked with me knows I treat them professionally. I do not have favourites. Salah is an outstanding player who supports his teammates. He is disciplined and a role model. Whether he starts or is substituted, that is part of his duty as a player. Everyone understands that my decisions are for the good of the team and the national side.”

Hassan continued to reject any claims of tension, reaffirming that unity within the team remains strong despite outside rumours. He added, “Rumours are always spread about star players and teams, but Salah is extremely disciplined. He trains with full commitment and always supports my decisions as head coach. I believe he will respond positively tomorrow.” Salah had scored nine goals during the qualifiers, playing a key role in helping Egypt qualify for the finals for the fourth time in their history. The team is now determined to secure their first-ever win on the global stage.

With Group G’s opening fixtures all ending in draws, the group standings are finely poised. Egypt will next take on New Zealand in a crucial encounter as they aim to claim a historic victory. Summing up his ambitions, Hassan said, “We drew our first match, but our goal is to win and claim all three points. That is the ambition of the Egyptian people, for Egyptian football, and for African football as a whole. We represent all of them and are determined to deliver a strong performance.”
