Manchester United’s efforts to reshape their midfield are already underway, but Gary Neville believes his former club could have another promising option in front of them. That potential signing is Felix Nmecha, the Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder who has impressed with his performances at the World Cup.
United have already strengthened Michael Carrick’s squad by finalising a £35 million transfer for Atalanta’s Ederson. Yet, with Casemiro having departed and Manuel Ugarte reportedly drawing interest from AC Milan, there remains a strong sense that another addition in midfield will be necessary before the summer transfer window closes.
This is where Nmecha becomes an intriguing prospect. While he may not be the high-profile name most frequently linked with Manchester United, he could represent a more logical and balanced choice.
Neville’s evaluation came after watching Nmecha deliver an impressive performance for Germany.
“The more he plays like he did the other night, the more expensive he’ll get,” Neville said while speaking to ITV.
“At the moment, we’re hearing Manchester United are being quoted £100 million for the West Ham lad Fernandes, so they’ll need to look around this tournament and across Europe for alternatives.”
“He looked outstanding the other night; it looked like he had absolutely everything.”
That closing remark carries weight. In a transfer market where top midfielders regularly command fees exceeding £80 million, describing a player as having “absolutely everything” is far from casual praise. It reflects a footballer capable of carrying the ball, linking play, pressing, running tirelessly, and arriving in threatening positions.
Now 25, Nmecha began his career at Manchester City before moving to Germany. After three seasons with Borussia Dortmund, he appears more complete, mature, and ready to take on the challenge of the Premier League.
Manchester United’s reported pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes makes sense—he is talented, proven in the Premier League, and highly regarded. However, if the asking price continues to hover around £100 million, United must adopt a pragmatic approach.
Reports suggest Nmecha has a release clause valued at €80 million (approximately £69.3 million), which will become active next summer. Currently, he could be secured for around £52 million, giving United a limited window to act before Dortmund gain stronger negotiating power.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright also highlighted Nmecha’s all-round abilities, noting: “When you watch him, he breaks lines, gets into the box, and has Kimmich covering for him. He can play as a No.8 or No.10, he can finish, and you can see why clubs are showing interest. He’s got everything.”
This adaptability is precisely what Manchester United require. Carrick’s midfield cannot rely solely on specialists; it needs players capable of changing the tempo and dynamics of a match.
Duncan Ferguson added his praise, commenting: “He’s a very good young player with a strong right foot, athleticism, and great movement across the pitch. He looks capable of getting into the box, defending well, and he’s got the right physical presence. You can easily see why clubs are keen on him.”
For Manchester United, Felix Nmecha presents a familiar transfer quandary—delay the move and risk a price surge, or act early and face uncertainty. However, Neville’s viewpoint appears rooted in something United have often lacked in recent years: clarity.
If Gary Neville’s assessment proves accurate, Nmecha could well offer the ideal combination of quality, value, and timing to become one of the smartest midfield acquisitions of the summer.
