Petrol and diesel prices vary across different states in India due to local taxes (VAT) and freight costs. On June 22, 2026, the fuel prices (per liter) in major metros and major cities of the country are recorded as follows:

• Condition of metropolitan cities: Today in the country’s capital New Delhi, petrol is being sold at Rs 102.12 and diesel at Rs 83.09 per liter. In the financial capital Mumbai, petrol is at Rs 111.18 and diesel at Rs 86.00. The price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 113.47 and diesel is Rs 93.50, while in Chennai the price of petrol remains at Rs 107.77 and diesel at Rs 91.50 per liter.

• Big cities of North India: In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, today petrol is stable at Rs 102.05 and diesel at Rs 95.75 per liter. In Noida adjacent to Delhi, petrol is available at Rs 102.12 and diesel at Rs 91.70 per litre, while in Gurugram petrol is available at Rs 102.77 and diesel at Rs 91.70 per litre. The price of petrol in Chandigarh is Rs 98.10 per liter and in the pink city Jaipur, petrol is Rs 112.66 and diesel is Rs 90.91 per liter.

• South and other areas: Fuel prices are very high in Hyderabad, here petrol is at Rs 115.69 and diesel at Rs 97.00. In Bengaluru, petrol was recorded at Rs 110.93 and diesel at Rs 90.00 per litre. The price of petrol in Bihar’s capital Patna is Rs 113.35, in Bhubaneswar the price of petrol is Rs 109.92 and in Thiruvananthapuram the price of petrol is Rs 115.49 per liter. Talking about diesel, it is available at Rs 82.25 per liter in Ahmedabad and Rs 92.50 per liter in Pune.

What are the major factors due to which fuel prices are decided every day?

Retail prices of petrol and diesel in India mainly depend on five major factors:

• International price of Crude Oil: Petrol and diesel are produced from crude oil only. When the price of crude oil increases in the global market or the supply is stopped by OPEC countries, the risk of fuel becoming expensive in the country also increases.

• Dollar-Rupee Exchange Rate: India imports about 80-85% of its crude oil requirement from abroad, which is paid for in US dollars. If the Indian rupee weakens against the dollar, oil companies have to pay more for imports.

• Government Tax (Tax Structure): A large part of fuel prices goes in the form of excise duty of the central government and VAT of the state governments. This is the reason why prices change as we move from one state to another.

• Cost of Refining and Transportation: The cost of converting crude oil into petrol and diesel in the country’s refineries and then safely transporting it to petrol pumps located in different parts of the country is also added to the final price.
