New York, June 22: The arrival of Solstice Day was marked in Times Square by a vibrant gathering of individuals engaging in the ancient practice of yoga.
Organized by the Indian Consulate General, the event celebrated the International Day of Yoga, featuring yoga sessions led by thousands throughout the day and into the evening.
HR Nagendra, chancellor of Vivekananda Yoga University, inaugurated the event with a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that “Yoga transcends mere physical exercise; it embodies the essence of holistic living.”
As the day unfolded, the iconic Times Square buzzed with thousands of visitors who came to witness the “Mind Over Madness” program, showcasing various yoga postures performed on multiple stages.
The first session was led by Ruchika Lal, a prominent instructor from the Art of Living Foundation.
Throughout the day, yoga sessions continued every couple of hours, accommodating many eager participants.
This celebration was co-hosted by the Consulate General and the Times Square Alliance.
Yoga has gained immense popularity among New Yorkers, with numerous studios and classes reflecting its universal appeal, a true gift from India to the global community.
Even on a Sunday when the NASDAQ market was closed, Times Square was alive with activity, and Alliance President Tom Harris remarked, “We hope you can discover a sense of tranquility amidst the city's hustle and bustle today.”
The Alliance established a Yoga Village in the Square, traditionally known for its entertainment and commercial activities, to promote the ancient Indian practice of holistic living.
Douglass Stewart, co-founder of the Summer Solstice -- Yoga in Times Square, which aligns with the International Day of Yoga recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 at PM Modi's request, stated, “Through our yoga practice, we connect with our harmonious essence, our steadiness, and our love, embracing all goodness and unity.”
