In Lakhisarai, Bihar, authorities have exposed a cheating syndicate during the NEET-UG re-examination, reminiscent of the film "Munna Bhai MBBS." The police allege that this group arranged for 'solvers' to take the medical entrance exam on behalf of candidates. A total of 24 individuals have been arrested, including medical students and employees from a biometric company involved in the examination process. Following the cancellation of the original exam due to a paper leak controversy, over 2 million medical aspirants participated in the NEET (UG) re-test on Sunday, during which this network was uncovered. Authorities suspect that Arpit Raj, a medical student from Gaya's ANM Medical College and Hospital, is one of the masterminds behind this operation. Previously, the CBI had interrogated Raj regarding the 2024 NEET paper leak case. Another medical student, Mayank Kashyap, a third-year MBBS student at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), has also been apprehended. Additionally, fourteen employees from the biometric company involved in the examination process were arrested.
Revealing the Proxy Exam Scheme
The alleged network came under scrutiny when Mayank Kashyap reportedly entered the Hasanpur High School examination center posing as a biometric company employee. He was the first to be caught during the investigation, prompting police to raid KRK Higher Secondary School and Central School in Lakhisarai. During these raids, seven candidates and several others linked to the racket were arrested. Investigators suspect that the gang planned to manipulate the examination process by employing trained solvers in place of actual candidates, aided by insiders.
Arrests of Medical and Nursing Students
The investigation has revealed the involvement of students from medical and nursing backgrounds. Poonam Kumari, a nursing student from Banaras Hindu University, was allegedly caught taking the exam as another candidate. Saurabh Jha, a student from AIIMS Raebareli, was also arrested. Among those apprehended was Aman Agarwal, an intern from Shahdara Medical College in Delhi, along with nursing student Sanjeet from Nalanda Medical College and Hospital and his brother.
Challenges Despite Restrictions
The investigation raises questions about how medical students managed to participate in the NEET exam despite institutional restrictions. Medical colleges had instructed students not to leave campus during the examination. Several institutions, including PMCH, had organized seminars and quizzes as part of monitoring measures. However, reports indicate that some students did not participate in these activities. Police discovered that Mayank Kashyap had left college under the pretext of illness and was later arrested in Lakhisarai. The Bihar police's investigation is now focused on uncovering the entire network, identifying other individuals involved, and determining the extent of alleged irregularities in the NEET re-examination process.
