Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni has opted for a composed and dignified response after Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti suggested that the Albiceleste "don’t play high intensity football." Speaking ahead of Argentina’s upcoming World Cup group stage match against Austria, Scaloni tactfully turned the Italian’s observation into a compliment towards his team’s tactical discipline.

Addressing reporters in Dallas, where Argentina will play their second Group J fixture, Scaloni dismissed any notion of friction with Ancelotti. The experienced Brazilian coach had commented that Argentina’s approach was not built on constant pressing or relentless energy, prompting discussions about the world champions’ physical style of play.

Scaloni, however, quickly clarified the situation. "I take it positively. He spoke well of us; he didn’t say anything negative. I understood what he meant. Since he mixed Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese in his comments, perhaps the message got a bit lost. But I took it as praise, not criticism. I am certain of that," he said, calmly downplaying any potential controversy.

Expanding on his footballing philosophy, the Argentina boss explained that intensity in modern football is not merely about running harder or pressing higher but about intelligent positioning and control. He stressed that defensive structure and awareness in transitions often determine success more than physical output alone. According to Scaloni, the best teams today seek composure rather than chaos, particularly during major tournaments where tactical balance is key.

"It depends on what one means by intensity," Scaloni elaborated. "When you don’t have possession, you must make sure the opponent doesn’t hurt you. Very few teams press high and man-mark across the pitch. Strength now lies in dominating the midfield — that’s where matches are decided. Whether you attack with three forwards or defend with three or five at the back, what counts is how you react after losing the ball."

Reflecting on Argentina’s evolution since their World Cup triumph in Qatar 2022, Scaloni emphasised the importance of blending experience with youth. He noted that emerging talents such as Nico Paz and Giuliano Simeone have added fresh energy and tactical diversity to the squad, allowing the team to adjust to different match scenarios with greater versatility.

"The team continues on the right path even after three and a half years," Scaloni said. "They’ve not eased up, and that’s why they remain competitive. There’s always room to get better, and the players have understood that perfectly. It’s never easy for everyone to be at 100 per cent given the number of matches they play, but all 26 players are fit and ready to contribute."

Looking ahead, Scaloni’s main objective is to secure qualification from Group J. Both Argentina and Austria are tied on three points, setting up a crucial encounter that could decide who tops the group. A win for the defending champions would confirm their place at the summit.

Elsewhere, Brazil have taken control of their group after a commanding 3-0 victory over Haiti. With that result, Ancelotti’s squad only require a draw in their final match against Scotland to secure a berth in the round of 32.
