Cape Verde head coach Bubista voiced his strong disappointment following a controversial moment in his team’s 2-2 draw with Uruguay at the World Cup. The coach criticised what he saw as unsporting behaviour from the Uruguayan side, especially given Marcelo Bielsa’s well-known emphasis on fair play, which added to his frustration.
Dispute arises over Uruguay’s equaliser
The flashpoint occurred just before half-time, with Cape Verde leading 1-0 after a superb free-kick from Kevin Pina. During a stoppage, Uruguay’s Federico Vinas was seen assisting Telmo Arcanjo, helping stretch the Cape Verde player’s leg due to cramp. However, upon noticing Uruguay’s counterattack developing, Vinas suddenly dropped Arcanjo’s leg and rejoined play. Moments later, the ball was crossed into the box, allowing Maxi Araujo to score and bring Uruguay level.
Bubista questions Uruguay’s sportsmanship
The Cape Verde coach admitted feeling “upset” after witnessing a Uruguay player abandon his act of assistance to participate in the play that resulted in the equaliser. Bubista expressed visible frustration over the perceived lack of fair play during that sequence.
“I was upset by that because Bielsa taught us to have fair play. That’s something he speaks about in his press conferences and demonstrates in the matches his teams play. We learned what fair play meant through his attitude,” Bubista said after the match. “It was frustrating, but that’s also part of football and part of our growth as a team.”
Accepting shared responsibility
Despite his disappointment, Bubista acknowledged that his team could have acted differently to prevent the situation. “We could have done something to stop that from happening — we could have kicked the ball out of play,” he admitted. “But we’re trying to play in our own way. It’s natural that players feel pressure in such moments, and the same applies to the Uruguay team. We have to learn and grow from this experience.”
Decisive fixtures ahead for both teams
The result marks another strong display from Cape Verde, who continue to exceed expectations in Group H. They will face Saudi Arabia in Houston for their final group match, aiming to make history by advancing to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Uruguay now face intense pressure to deliver a top performance in their last group fixture against Euro 2024 champions Spain.
