Thibaut Courtois has spoken openly about his long-term future with Real Madrid, acknowledging that while he hopes to retire at the Santiago Bernabéu, the final say will rest with the club. The 34-year-old Belgian international continues to perform at an elite level and remains one of the most respected goalkeepers in world football.

A childhood dream realised

Despite being well into his thirties, Courtois continues to be a crucial figure for Real Madrid. With his current contract running until June 2027, the experienced goalkeeper has reflected on his journey in the Spanish capital – one that began eight years ago after his high-profile transfer from Chelsea.

Speaking after Belgium’s 0-0 draw against Iran during the 2026 World Cup, Courtois discussed his emotional connection with Real Madrid. “It depends on what the club wants. I have a lot of respect for their decisions. I hope to finish my career there; in four or five years, we’ll see. It’s my dream, obviously. When I was a kid, I dreamed of playing for Real. I’ve been there for eight years now and I’m very happy,” said the Belgian star.

The club’s decision will be decisive

Although Courtois is determined to end his playing career in Madrid, he recognises the realities of professional football. At 34, he understands that every veteran must eventually make way for the next generation. However, his current form indicates that he still has several seasons left at the highest level.

The former Atlético Madrid and Chelsea goalkeeper reiterated that his future depends on Real Madrid’s sporting management. He admitted that the club’s long-term plans will ultimately determine whether he receives an extension that allows him to retire in white.

Eight years of growth and achievement

Courtois’s time at Real Madrid has not always been easy. Initially facing criticism, he has since become an undisputed starter and the hero of the 2022 Champions League final. His 32 appearances in La Liga this season underline his continued importance to the team, while his performances at the 2026 World Cup have reaffirmed his standing among the world’s elite goalkeepers.

Having been with the club for nearly a decade, Courtois now stands among Madrid’s legendary goalkeepers. If he achieves his goal of playing another “four or five years,” he could still be wearing the famous white shirt at 39 – a testament to his professionalism and dedication.

World Cup frustration with Belgium

While his club situation seems secure, Courtois faces challenges on the international stage. Belgium’s national team has struggled for consistency at the 2026 World Cup, and their recent goalless draw has put their qualification hopes in jeopardy. Two consecutive draws have led to external criticism, including remarks from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The stalemate against Iran was particularly disappointing for the Belgian side, who were reduced to ten men late in the match. Despite their inability to score, Courtois delivered a composed performance, keeping a clean sheet against an energetic Iranian team that threatened regularly on the counter-attack.
