Jordan’s maiden World Cup journey came to an end as Algeria staged a second-half comeback to claim a 2-1 victory, setting up a decisive meeting with Austria for the runners-up spot in Group J.
Nadhir Benbouali’s header cancelled out Nizar Al-Rashdan’s first-half strike, before Amine Gouiri netted from close range in the 82nd minute following a goalmouth scramble, reviving Algeria’s campaign after their 3-0 opening defeat to Argentina.
The win drew Algeria level with Austria on three points in Group J, confirming defending champions Argentina’s progression as group winners after their 2-0 triumph over Austria earlier on Monday.
Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic reinstated veteran forward Riyad Mahrez to the starting lineup after leaving him on the bench against Argentina, and the Manchester City star played a key role in unlocking a compact Jordan defence that relied heavily on counterattacks.
Mahrez squandered an early opportunity when he failed to control a brilliant lofted pass from Hicham Boudaoui, and moments later, he was denied by goalkeeper Yazeed Abu Laila when attempting a delicate chip after racing onto another long ball from Boudaoui.
Jordan, who had fallen 3-1 to Austria in their opening match, took the lead in the 36th minute through a combination of quick interplay and a slice of luck when Algerian midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki lost possession near his own box.
Mousa Al-Tamari’s misplaced effort deflected across the area to Al-Rashdan, who finished confidently into the bottom right corner.
At half-time, Petkovic introduced Nabil Bentaleb and Benbouali, and the changes immediately injected greater energy into Algeria’s play.
Under heavy pressure from Jordan defenders, Benbouali rose to meet a Mahrez corner with a glancing header that bounced into the corner of the net in the 69th minute.
Thirteen minutes later, Algeria grabbed the winner from another set-piece. Substitute Anis Hadj Moussa delivered a curling corner that deflected off Al-Rashdan, allowing Gouiri to stab home from close range.
The result now sets up a compelling clash between Algeria and Austria, rekindling memories of the infamous “Disgrace of Gijon” from the 1982 World Cup.
Back then, Austria and West Germany were accused of manipulating their group-stage encounter to secure mutual advancement at Algeria’s expense, though both teams denied the allegations and FIFA later cleared them of any wrongdoing.
Algeria will now seek a measure of redemption when they face Austria in Kansas City on Saturday, while Jordan will finish their campaign against Argentina and talisman Lionel Messi, who has scored all five of his team’s goals at this tournament so far.
