Mohamed Salah produced a stellar performance as Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver, marking the nation’s first-ever triumph at the World Cup. The Liverpool star netted once and set up another, guiding the Pharaohs to overturn an early setback and move to the top of Group G, strengthening their prospects of advancing to the knockout stage.
Early setback in the first half
Egypt achieved a historic 3-1 win over New Zealand at BC Place, securing their maiden World Cup victory. The Pharaohs bounced back from conceding early to earn all three points, taking their tally to four in Group G after an opening draw against Belgium.
Despite being favourites, with Salah and Omar Marmoush leading the attack, Egypt were stunned in the 15th minute. Lapses in defence during a set-piece allowed New Zealand’s Finn Surman to rise above everyone and head home from Tim Payne’s corner, briefly quieting the passionate Egyptian supporters.
The All Whites, who had shown their fighting spirit in a 2-2 draw with Iran earlier, looked composed enough to protect their advantage as Egypt struggled to find their rhythm before halftime. However, the superior technical quality of the Egyptian team began to show after the break as they took control of possession and dictated the game’s tempo.
Salah inspires the turnaround
The comeback began in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko met Mohamed Hany’s well-placed cross to head in the equaliser. That goal completely shifted the momentum, and nine minutes later, the stadium erupted. Ziko became the provider this time, combining brilliantly with Salah in a quick one-two that allowed the captain to set up his shot. Salah, as ever, delivered — firing a trademark powerful left-foot strike into the net to give Egypt the lead. Mahmoud Trezeguet sealed the result in the 82nd minute with a header from Salah’s corner.
Salah praises the atmosphere
After the final whistle, Salah reflected on the victory and the tremendous support from fans in Vancouver.
“It’s a great achievement for all the players. It’s a great win. It’s a great vibe. The next game is very important,” said the Egyptian captain, visibly delighted after leading his side to a historic comeback.
Knockout stage now within reach
With four points from their first two games, Egypt enter their final group fixture brimming with confidence following this landmark win. The Pharaohs will face Iran next at Seattle Stadium on Saturday, aiming to finish at the top of Group G and secure a place in the knockout rounds.
