Overview of Compassionate Use Program

A 79-year-old individual has been granted rare early access to Eli Lilly's experimental obesity treatment, retatrutide, through the FDA's compassionate use initiative. This development has sparked curiosity regarding the identity of the patient, with some speculating that it could be former President Donald Trump. As reported by a health news outlet, the FDA's program aims to provide investigational treatments to patients facing serious or life-threatening health issues when existing options are inadequate.

The request for retatrutide was made in April by Ranganath Muniyappa, a senior clinician at the National Institutes of Health, who noted the patient suffers from refractory obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, and pulmonary hypertension, a serious condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the lungs. The application has drawn attention from high-ranking health officials, indicating that the patient may hold significant influence or connections.

While the patient's identity remains undisclosed, the health news outlet reached out to the White House to inquire if the recipient could be Trump, who has openly discussed his struggles with obesity and weight-loss medications. White House spokesperson Kush Desai did not confirm or deny Trump's involvement, instead directing inquiries to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). When asked about Trump's potential conditions, Desai referenced Trump's latest medical evaluation, which did not mention obstructive sleep apnea or pulmonary hypertension.

HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard stated, "The FDA supports expanded access programs that can provide patients with serious or life-threatening conditions access to investigational treatments when no comparable or satisfying approved therapies are available." Each request is evaluated individually based on clinical circumstances and regulatory requirements. Sources indicated that the patient had previously tried obesity medications like tirzepatide but only achieved moderate weight loss. Muniyappa reportedly advised against bariatric surgery due to the patient's age and existing health issues.

Trump's Stance on Weight-Loss Medications

Former President Trump has previously commented on obesity medications, often referring to them as "the fat drug" in conversations about friends and staff who use them. However, during a January 2026 interview with a major publication, Trump stated that he has never personally used GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy or Ozempic. When directly asked, he replied, "No, I have not. I probably should." Despite the ongoing speculation, no concrete evidence has emerged to confirm Trump as the recipient of the compassionate-use approval, and federal officials have not revealed the patient's identity.
